Thank you, Linda. I know this adress. I want to find descendants of Bobr jews who emigrated before 1917 or later.

Elena,

My great-grandfather Louis Soskin (Leiba-Yankel Abramov Sos’kin) was from Bobr, Belarus. He later moved to Mariupol, Ukraine, before emigrating to New York City in 1904. I would be happy to connect with you.

Sincerely,

Hi, Wendy!
Very interesting
Do you know about his relatives who stayed in Bobr? Surnames of wifes?

I guess that's different from Bobruisk?  I have a photo of a couple people who I believe are from Bobruisk: Boris and Hasya Bobruskin (both b. around 1885 iin "Homel, Mohilev" and arrived 1905 or so - have a manifest for Hasya but not Boris).  They're not - as far as I know! - related to me, but their portraits (taken in NY, where they lived for a long time) were among a group of 7 photos that my paternal GF (and GM) had.  Can send if you like, or contact me directly, <theforsyths@...>

Oops, NOW I see that there really IS a town/shtetl Bobr (how WOULD that be pronounced?  I know Slavic pronunciation pretty well, and few of the languages have the sounds B+R with nothing between them!

No, Bobr is not Bobruisk

Yelena,

Try these tips to find people that emigrated from a specific town.  It is easiest with small shtetls.

At Steve Morse's Ellis Island portal you can search for anyone from a certain town.  You do not have to enter a name, or any other search field.  Remember that early manifests did not list town, and many towns are spelled incorrectly.  You may want to also do a soundex search, or a search by only the first few letters of the town name.  Remember to check on the correct box in the search for these options.

On either Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org you can search for anyone born in the town by entering the town name under place of birth on the search page.  When I have done that I have found naturalization records and other documents.

Searching:  RATOWSKY / CHAIMSON (Ariogala / Ragola, Lith.)
WALTZMAN / WALZMAN (Ustrzyki Dolne / Istryker, Pol.)
LEVY (Tyrawa Woloska, Pol.)
LEFFENFELD / LEFENFELD (Daliowa/ Posada Jasliska, Pol.)
BOJDA (Tarnobrzeg, Pol.)
SOKALSKY / SOLON  FINGER(MAN) (Grodek, Bialystok, Pol.)
BOBISH / APPEL (Odessa)

Hi Sherri!
I want to find the living descendants of emigrants from this town. They are the 3rd or 4th generation. Of course, they have another surnames, but I hope that they keep the old history.

Hi, Elena!

Louis’s wife wasn’t from Bobr.

Louis’s parents may have stayed in Bobr, but I don’t know for sure. His mother’s maiden name was something like “Feigen” or “Fagen.”

Best regards,
