Let me restate my name question Re: Nellie #russia #names

OK What name in Russia or Jewish name..would the American name of NELLIE Be? I have dyslexia. I just can not figure out what name on the passenger list would be for her American of NELLIE.
This family came in 1905 to Mt Forest or Durham, Ontario, Canada. There were four traveling together.. The grandma Bayla Cohen Levine age 70 plus. Ann was 13 yrs Sam 12 yrs and Nellie 9yrs. There Father Jacob Levine owned a clothing store. Please forgive my ill stated need for help. Gayle |

Gayle - I have seen several Nellie used for females names Helen, Ellen or Hannah. With an Ann already in the family I would tend toward the Hellen/Ellen option. Dorann

If you go to the Jewishgen Memorial Plaque Data Base and enter the
given name (Sounds like) Nellie you will get a list of Nellies, many
with Hebrew/Yiddish names. The most common is Nechama/Necha/Neche.
There are quite a few more, not surprisingly, varied.

The closest Hebrew name I can think of is Nili - it is in fact an acronym
for "Nezach Yisrael lo Yeshaker" a quote from Samuel 1, chapter
15 verse29 and an expression for the eternity of the Jewish
People. The bname was adopted by the Secret Organisation created in
1915 and active
during World War 1. Its members in Jewish settlements in Palestine were
passing information to the British in Egypt about matters concerning the
Ottoman rule. It was in fact an early attempt to bring about Jewish
self rule in Paleatine. The movement was eventually discovered by
the Turks who severely punished its members and also some non-members

Hi Gayle,
Nellie, or possibly Nettie, might have had the Yiddish name, Necha. (Not the greatest homonym for a current Hebrew word that means handicapped.) My mother-in-law was a Nettie/Necha so I know of what I write. Nad that also is a variation of the Nechama as others have replied. Regards, -- Madeleine Isenberg

Nettie is also derived from Genesha.
I had an aunt named Nettie, and as far as I know, it wasn't a nickname or diminutive. Her "Jewish" name was Genesha, and formal/English name was Nettie. I can't be absolutely certain, as I don't have birth certificate, but Nettie is what's on the 1910 census form when she was ~6 years old.

The Becker's Email
Rather than looking for Nellie on a ship's manifest, look for Sam's naturalization papers, assuming he was naturalized in Canada. Those should give details of his arrival. Once you know when he arrived and the ship, you can find him on the manifest and the others should be with him.
I would note that the 1911 Canadian census gives Nellie's year of arrival as 1906 (Sam's too) rather than 1905. So be sure to allow some leeway. Also, the 1921 census records that Jacob was naturalized in 1906. You might look for clues regarding his children. Perhaps you are aware that at times, a ship manifest my have a Jewish (Hebrew or Yiddish) name, rather than the legal or civil name they became known as later in life. You might find the tombstone of my cousin, Nettie (not Nellie) Spira nee Gottlieb, interesting. Her tombstone records her Jewish name as "Nesheh, daughter of Menashe". You can see it at:

I did not notice anyone mention that Eleanor is also shortened to Nell, Nellie etc as it is Helen and and Ellen. In Russian Eleonora. Did you check the Census? Death notices of parents or brother Sam? They may list her and maybe her married name if you don't know it. If you do, search for her death notice and burial and headstone.
