How do you ?????? #general

Trudy Barch

Hi genners,

Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

1)  list same sex couples?   Who do you put in the female slot?  And who in the male slot?

2)  2nd marriage to the same person.   Married - divorced - remarried same person.

Thank you,   Trudy Barch,   FLorida

Same sex couples will require both being listed as their own sex, so I am not sure you can put one as husband and the other as wife without messing up the database in other ways.

My aunt and uncle married twice. She married and divorced in-between.  I list both marriages separately, as they would appear on any BMD list that way and also because my aunt considered them to be married twice.

Hi Trudy,

I have a same-sex couple in my tree. I use Legacy, which now caters for same-sex couples: you can enter both members with the same sex and also enter them as married. (Previously it was impossible to enter them as a couple without "fibbing" about the sex of one member.) Legacy designates them as "partners" rather than "husband" and "wife".

Keep safe, happy hunting,

It undoubtedly will vary depending on what software you're using. I use Ancestral Quest, which lists same-sex spouses as Partner1 and Partner2, and shows each partner's gender accurately.

Thank you everyone for your responses.   I am glad to hear that the 'newer' programs now allow you to list partners rather than previous male/female only.  My program  is 'old' and out of date.   I decided to list my relative in the male/female spot of their gender and then their partner in the other.   Not necessarily the correct way but the way that is best for use with my program.

Is Partner the correct/polite word to use today?   What happen to significant other,  companion?   Are they outdated words?

Thanks,   Be well.   Be safe.     Trudy

Trudy - if we are addressing contemporary gay couples most people I know use "partners" until or if they marry. Then gay men refer to each other as husbands and lesbian couples refer to each other as wife. I am part of the community and live in Oklahoma and that is what I see here. Several of my favorite authors are lesbian (not why I read them - had no clue when purchased) and if married they refer to their "wife" on their blogs or about the author info on Amazon.

If you are sticking to your old software you will probably have to just enter notes on the relationship. I use Legacy and know some great uncles were gay but as far as I know they were never in long term relationships - a different era.

The answer depends on the software you are using. I suggest you write
the developers and ask them for help.

I have had good responses from John at Brother's Keeper.

I have not tried your problem, but define each person
without spouses and then add them together using the databaseID number.

For marriages, I just enter the information.

I repeat, each software has their own solutions.
