While researching names related to an uncle of my late mother I bumped twice  in Familysearch.org into Udel BLASZ from Bardejov,Slovakia. Once it was identified as a male born in 1874 and next "he"

married in 1894 with Salomon FINGERHUT from Wisnicza (Nowy Wisnicz) whom I clearly located on JRI-PL. I know that Udel is a nickname of Yehuda. Any  ideaS?

Thanks

I've seen Udel as a female name on two occasions.

My great grandmother's Hebrew name was Yehudit, which was Americanized to Helen, but on her ship manifest her name was Udie. She came from Stanislawow, now IVno-Frankivsk, in Ukraine

Udel is usually a woman's name. I  have never seen it as male, although Idel can be. I have only seen Judel, Yudel, and Iudel for Juda or Yehuda.

Udla was definitely a female name in Bessarabia in the 19th century.
My husband's Grandmother was from Bessarabia.  A document from 1894 verifying her birth says that the name is Udla.
In Yiddish, people called her Hodel.  Her marriage license in 1897 in Geneva in 1897 says Udla.
Her marriage announcement in Berlin in 1897 has her name as Adele.  She and her husband were students at the University in Berlin.  We
have no idea why they got married in Geneva Switzerland. . In the USA she was legally Adele.

since Udi appears as a kinui for Yehuda, I could understand Udel also as a kinui for Yehuda > Yudel > Udel;

My mother (born in Ukraine around 1907) said her Hebrew name was Rivka Udel.  She was one of 4 Rivka's of about the same age named after an ancestor, whom we know about, but I don't know where the Udel came from and unfortunately never asked....  Her official papers in the US used her new American name of Reva, no middle name.

The nickname: “Yudel” (with a proper ‘yud’ sound at the beginning) Is for the male Hebrew name- Yehuda. Udel and Yudel may sound the same to those who drop the “Y” sound at the beginning of words. Such is the case for those who hail from certain areas of Lita/Poland and is true for some Israelis today.>

I believe that Yudel is a nickname for Yehuda. Udel is pronounced like
oodel which is usually a woman's name.

Hi Trudy, This is a longshot, but my maternal side was from Ukraine. My ggf Yishea (Yehoshua) Berenson was married to a woman the family knew as Riva the Midwife. After marrying him, she lived in Krasnoye, Podolia Gubernia, Ukraine.. I know she delivered the Loigman children in Krasnoye between 1892 and 1901.The family said she was quite successful and even lectured at a school for midwifery. Her grown children pictured in a 1904-photo I have are all wearing substantial jewelry..I have been searching for her maiden name for three decades! Might this be the Riva/Rivka for whom your relatives were named? Cousin? Molly

Our Aunt Udel's given name was Adele.

Thanks to all who responded so far. It seems that Udel is a female given name when and if pronounced properly.
Since I live in Jerusalem I am constantly baffled by contemporary  Israeli(modern) given names shared by both males and females such as : Hadar, Zohar, Tal,Chen, Gal and even the more traditional Yonah. We even have a joke: Tal Cohen and Yonah Levy got married. Who is the bride and who is the bridegroom?
