Jewish birth records from Kuty around 1905 #austria-czech #galicia #ukraine #poland

Svetlana Astakhova

Hello everyone, I'm new to this group.

I'm looking for birth details of my husband's father, Mocek (Moshe ?) Klinger. We know that he was born in Kuty, Poland around 1905 (that's the place of birth and year of birth he stated on his US immigration form in 1940). It looks like at the time Kuty was austrian territory.

There are a few of records, in polish/galicia and austrian sources, about my husband's grandfather Juda Leib Klinger (father of Mocek Klinger) who was a mill owner in Kuty. The records are mostly business directories from 1906 to 1926. However, we were not able to find any records of marriage for Juda Leib Klinger or birth of Mocek Klinger in Kuty (or any of his siblings).

Where should we look? Lviv jewish births archives? Austrian jewish births archives?

Thank you for any help!

Looking for Klinger, Kuty

Dear ??:

Unfortunately all the Jewish vital records of Kuty other than 1833-1855 deaths have not survived. You can find our what other records have survived and where they can be found by searching for Kuty at Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots Archival inventory searchable at https://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.php.

Here is an 1899 marriage record for Juda Leib HORN recte KLINGER from Kuty and Itte Leja HECHLER: http://agadd.home.net.pl/metrykalia/300/sygn.%201988/pages/PL_1_300_1988_0035.htm. Whether this is your family, I do not know, but additional information in the record might help you decide. Although Kuty marriage records from this time might not be known to survive, this record was registered in Kolomyja, where the marriage took place and where the bride was from. Found by searching JRI-Poland for surname KLINGER and town Kuty.

Hi Logan,

Thank you for your reply!

Would you happen to know what 'recte KLINGER' means?

I saw this record, but I doubt that it's the right Juda Klinger as it seems that his wife's name was Ruchel / Ruchla. At least as per the record of marriage of one of his kids which I found in the archive of Paris.

On the other hand, I found another record, of birth, with same people - Juda Leib HORN recte KLINGER and Itte Leja HORN recte KLINGER - as parents of Jacob Mojzesz born on May 23, 1904 in Kolomyya (only 45 km / 28 miles from Kuty). As far as we know my husband's father's birth name was Mocek/Moshe Yacob Klinger but his self-declared birth date was August 3, 1905.

It's the closest I got so far, but it's not a perfect match :(

I attached the record of birth which I managed to download, in case you or someone else want to take a look.

Svetlana,

You can also find three records mentioning the surname KLINGER and the town Kuty by searching Gesher Galicia's All Galicia Database, at: https://search.geshergalicia.org

If you enter KLINGER in the box for the "Surname", and enter "Kuty" in the box for "Keyword", you will get three results, two of which are property owner records from 1820. The third, though, is a record of the birth in Stanislawow on February 27, 1938 of Saba. She was the daughter of Jakob Moses KLINGER and Anna Chana ABOSCH. The parents had married in Kuty on January 31, 1937.

I don't know whether this record has any connection with your family.
