Looking for 19thC marriage record in NYC(?) #usa #austria-czech

I am looking for the marriage record of my pGGP, Eduard (Edward) STEIN (b. 1839, Siroke Trebcice, Bohemia) and Wilhelmina (Minna, Mina) ZUCKERMAN(N) (b. 1844, Krasna Lipa, Bohemia). I believe Minna arrived in NYC on 10 Sep 1866 under her maiden name and that Eduard arrived in NYC on 25 Mar 1867. A daughter Elenore was born 6 Apr 1868 in NYC; she died 17 Jul 1869 in NYC. Edward and Wilhelmina are listed as a married couple with a new son, my pGF, in the 1870 U.S. census for NYC. For these reasons I assume they married in NYC but I have been unable to find a NY or Bohemian marriage record. For NY, I tried "New York, New York City Marriage Records, 1829-1940" (I found the record for Minna’s sister Bertha). For Bohemia I used Badatelna. I welcome other suggestions/assistance.

Looking for the marriage Record and of My grandmother Rebecca(born Baunstein) to a Jacob Cohen lets say from 1907 to before the Census of 1910 where they have a son Harry age 20/12! They were later divoiced approx 3-5 years later! Harry their son died in an accident(falling from a roof or fire escape as a young boy! Jacob and Rebecca also had a daughter Sadie born about 1913 but raised by her father after the divoice! |

Hi Barbara, NYC did not enforce the filing of marriages until circa 1900. It is very possible that a rabbi married them and never filed any civil paperwork. I searched here: https://stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriages-igg.html?index=bride I used the broadest searches possible and found nothing. Ilan, I searched https://stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriages-igg.html?index=bride with broad parameters on name spelling, etc. and did not find a record using bride's surname Baunstein, or Jaffe (assuming that the following death record is the correct one.) I did find what may be little Harry Cohen's death record at https://stevemorse.org/vital/nydeath-igg.html May 2, 1910 Manhattan Harry Cohen, 20 months old. A bit more info transcribed at www.familysearch.org The actual cert will have info on cause of death, and their address.

If one is lucky as I was I did find two prior 1900 NYC marriages listed both of which provided needed answers. My maternal grandparents were married in Brooklyn in1897 and one of her siblings the year before in 1896. The rest of the family were from 1900 onward. This was years ago while I was at the library in SLC that I found them. They were indexed in a big printed book which gave the license number and from there found them in the microfilm. It was one of the volunteers who found them for me in the printed book. You can still find many marriages in NYC before 1900 as I found 1891 and 1895 on My first trip to the NYC Municipal archives for 2 great aunts in 2000. Licenses and applications didn't begin until 1908, yet they are valuable and available at the same archives. If the marriage was not registered, the license would still be there. One must not discount the possibility of mis-spellings on the original records. For several years, in the NYC Municipal Archives, I had searched for the marriage license of my maternal grandparents, Charles Black & Nellie Cohen, married March 20, 1892. I even tried using their Hebrew names - Yisrael Yechezkel and Nechama. I finally stumbled on it after using several combinations of spellings. They are listed on the license as ESRIAL BLOCK and MILLIE COHEN. Nellie's mother is listed as Mary CHONE. I suspect that some of the clerks in the office were, themselves, recent immigrants. On my mother's B.C., her parents are listed as coming from RUSHA.
Also, many times, a Jewish bride and groom only had a religious marriage, without it being registered by the city. |

Although I said there weren't a lot of marriage licenses before 1900 in NYC, which is correct, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. 2 sets of my ggrandparents married in 1870, and both have marriage records.
