Double First Name, 2nd Maiden Name, or Something Else? #galicia #general

A great-great uncle from Galicia, named A. Bienenstock, has the following in the information from New York, New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949. What would Nuseaue be, since the mother's married name would have been Bienenstock, and maiden name was Hoffert? I didn't find Nuseaue in Beider's book on given names. Thanks.

"Nuseaue," like many names in Family Search's NYC indexes, is likely a transcriber's bad reading of bad handwriting. I would want to get a copy of the original death record to interpret it for myself.

Also, as you may know, Abraham had a sister named Nettie Biegeleisen, one of whose daughters was Ester Marion Thurm (c.1890-1978). Perhaps she was named for Nettie and Abraham's mother. Unfortunately, her gravestone, pictured on JewishData.com, shows no Hebrew name.

Hi Carl,

Are you looking at the transcription, or a copy of the actual cert?

Those old certs are often times near impossible to read.  I suggest looking at the cert itself, and not relying on what a transcriber thought they saw written.

Could Hoffert be a previous husband's name and Nuseaue (or whatever it actually is) Esther's maiden name?

As others have implied, an index is simply a finding aid.  Trust nothing, verify everything is my motto, lol.

Could be Nussem if all the last couple if letters were unreadable.  Diane Jacobs
