Deciphering Manifest -- "Gachef"? #romania
kblackma2@...
I'm researching an ancestor, Max Finkelstein, and I think I found him on the last line of the attached manifest page. Under "Last Residence," it appears to say "Gachef." He's Romanian, but there does not appear to be a town by that name in Romania (or anywhere else for that matter. Any ideas what it's referring to?
Much thanks for any help. Keith Blackman

I had something similar happen regarding my father’s immigration. The family members wrote ”Servio,” which I couldn’t find. The late, very knowledgeable Phyllis Kramer told me that immigrants sometimes wrote the name of the inn where they had stayed the night before. I later learned it apparently was another stop on their route to America.
Happy hunting,

I had the same question about my father’s emigration to America from Romania. He answered “Servio” for last residence. When I couldn’t find it, the late and very knowledgeable Phyllis Kramer said sometimes people answered with the name of the inn they had stayed in the night before.
