Is it possible to see NY Death Certificates (not indexes) and Naturalization Records (not indexes) online during Covid? #records
Susan Goldsmith
I should know the answer to these two questions, but am floundering.
1. Is there any way to see death certificates, not indexes, after 1948-49 for NYC and Brooklyn online. I seek one for 1969 in Far Rockaway and one for 1981 in Brooklyn.
Thank you,

I think they are available if you physically go to an LDS Family History Center. stevemorse.org had links that are supposed to work in a family history center.

Susan,
I hope you are doing well.
I can answer #2. You can see many of the naturalization images online.
You might want to review this page:

Hi
The death certificates are locked away at the Health Department only available to direct family members.
Depends on what years you are looking for on the naturalization but a lot of them are on Ancestry or Family Search. A simple trick is go to the NARA NYC page and type in naturalization and they will explain what they have with links to the collections on FamilySearch mostly. However most of the Family Search files are not indexed so you need to have the certificate number and then know how to browse the files by number not searching by name.

Susan,
It's been sometime since I've worked on my lines that came through New York City. If memory serves correctly, NYC buroughs' death certificates after 1949 are not available online. Certificates older than (50) years are considered public (genealogical) records and may be ordered from the Municipal Clerk's office, if you are a direct descendant, and require a notarized request. Records younger than (50) years are considered protected records, and are only available to immediate family members. Kind regards, David Passman Dallas, TX dbpdallas@... If you are where LDS libraries are open, you can see old death certificates there. Check at familysearch.org to see if they have what you want available.
I intend to check to see if the closest library is open, so I can go there and access one that I want. Sally Bruckheimer Princeton, NJ

NY death certificates are not available to the general public.
For New York City (which includes both Brooklyn and Far Rockaway): Spouses, domestic partners, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren can obtain the certificate and the cause of death. Nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews, can obtain the information needed to do your genealogy, but without the cause of death. Other relatives are out of luck. See https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/services/death-certificates.page for more specific criteria. To order, go to https://www.vitalchek.com/death-certificates/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-health-and-mental-hygiene?click_id=855402888016363522&ppc=0 For all other cities, towns, etc., in NY State: If you are immediate family (parent, spouse, child, or sibling) or have a legitimate medical or legal need, then you can order them online. If you are a more distant relative and want them only because you are curious about your genealogy, then you cannot. To order, go to https://health.ny.gov/vital_records/death.htm

To clarify what I wrote a few minutes ago, I was speaking only of relatively recent records (from the last 70 years) that are still held by the health department. Older records that are held by the archives are not subject to the same restrictions.
