surname Lobel clarification re literacy #general #romania

I need to clarify my earlier statement that my ancestor LOBELS in Roman, Romania were illiterate. That was not the case with most Jewish males. Luc Radu read my post and further explained that many, in particular before, say, 1890, never learned the Latin alphabet. For example, my great grandfather Shulem sin Leib signed, but with Hebrew letters. Luc said that he believes literacy also was a function of when and from where our ancestors arrived.

This message is just to say that my great-grandfather, Myer Lobel, was from Romania- perhaps from Roman. I have been seeking more information without success. He went to Montreal. I think his wife's maiden name was Michaelevitz.  My grandmother, Molly, was born in Romania. Do you want to share information to see if we are connected or is Lobel too common a name to proceed in that direction? Luc Radu, do you have any more information? Thanks.
