"Holy Silence" Documents Vatican's Role in the Holocaust #holocaust #announcements
Jan Meisels Allen
The documentary, “Holy Silence” provides some answers as whether the Catholic Church could have done more to save Jews during the Holocaust. The documentary reveals actions and inactions leading up to and during World War ll. The film is being shown free of charge from August 15-22 sponsored by the Jewish Film Institute and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. You need to register -see below for the link.
Producer-director Steven Pressman working on another film heard about the Vatican and the Holocaust from some who work at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mr. Pressman focused a lot of his research on American figures who tried to influence the Vatican’s response to Nazi policies toward Jews as Hitler role to power. He also interviewed historians on American figures who tried to influence the Vatican’s response to Nazi policies toward Jews as Hitler rose to power.
The documentary not only addresses the silence of Pius Xll (pope from 2 March 1939 to 1958) but also discusses his predecessor, Pius XI, who was on the verge of issuing a papal encyclical that would have denounced Hitler and antisemitism. There were others in the Catholic Church who were willing to stand up to Hitler. Pressman told the Jewish Journal, “Pius XII, for his part, insisted that silence was the better path and that speaking out would have endangered even more Jewish lives. I think that has proven to be a very difficult argument to sustain, whether we’re talking about the world as it existed 80 years ago or so many of the social injustice issues that exist today.”

The link to see the movie doesn't seem to be working. I registered as requested and then clicked on Click to Watch and a still picture comes up with no way to view the movie.

Thank you for the reference. I just watched the film. It is a brilliant, thought provoking, sometimes heart-wrenching, documentary that makes you think deeply and wonder at the same time.
I would call it is masterpiece.

If you go through the Jewish Journal link to Holy Silence it works. I was the original poster and posted before I tried the direct link, but was able to watch the film going through the JJ link without a problem. You do have to do the free register click all the necessary buttons- its free and it takes you to the Jewish Film Institute order form then click to watch. Remember it is only available to August 22 and there is a Zoom Panel Discussion 8/20 at 5:30pm PST co-hosted by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). I have no affiliation with the video but it well worth the machinations to get to see it. Jan Meisels Allen Chairperson,. IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee

We watched this excellent documentary yesterday. I used the link at the bottom of the article in the Jewish Journal to register
https://jewishjournal.com/culture/arts/320367/holy-silence-documents-the-vaticans-role-in-the-holocaust/ Shortly thereafter I received an e-mail with a link to watch. We were very frustrated at first because the sound through both my laptop and the TV connection was very muted. It was impossible to hear anything. Only when we connected external speakers to my computer did the sound become audible. Hope this helps for anyone still trying to view the film. Vicky Furstenberg Ferraresi

We were very frustrated at first because the sound through both my laptop and the TV connection was very muted. It was impossible to hear anything. Only when we connected external speakers to my computer did the sound become audible. We watched it too. Excellent documentary. The only sound problem we encountered was a slight timing dtiscrepancy between the sound and the image. Not much, 1 second or so, perhaps because of the difference in wifi download speeds. Highly recommend watching while it is still available. Very illuminating on multiple aspects including Pius XI of whom I knew little, Pacelli's consistent behaviour both before and after becoming Pius XII, and several other important but far less known individuals who played important roles. Vicky, The documentary was excellent. I agree with you that the sound was very low. I had to use my headphones to be able to hear it. Regards, Sherri Bobish
