How to find UKRAINE birth and marriage records #ukraine #russia #records
mvayser@...
Bob,
Perhaps someone else can chime in about the more recent records, but here is the info found in the 1875 census. This was a census that was created as a result of the previous year's law about implementation of a mandatory conscription of men into the imperial army. The census only consisted of eligible men and didn't have the entire population documented. For example, women were not included. You probably know this, but just to reiterate, names like Herman, Irene, Evelyn, Simon, Gertrude are Americanized and not what your ancestors were called in Podolia. Solomon might have been called Shlioma, Simon - Shimon, etc. The others you would have to find through the original naturalization or other documents. It's possible that Duvid below is the same David you mention, but probably not possible to tell without having some additional documents. Also, not sure how Ios is related to Leybish. The 1875 census for Novaya Ushitsya Name - previous census - current age Ios s.o. Duvid - 24 - 40 Duvid (son) - 1 - 19 Srul (son) - - - 14 In the supplemental section of the census: Leybish s.o. Mortko - 24 y.o - lives in Staraya Ushitsa (Old Ushitsa) Shlioma (brother) - 16 - died Shlioma (1st cousin) - 16 - lives in the shtetl Brichany, Khotin uezd I briefly looked through the pages of names in Staraya Ushitsa and found Leybish: Leybish s.o. Mortko - 35 Aron (son) - 12 Mayorko (son) - 7 Shlioma (son) - 1 Mike Vayser

Gary,
Do you know of any records for Nova Ushytsya, Ukraine, or surrounding towns? My maternal father's family is from there. Names are Swerlick (Sverdlik): Solomon (1905-1990), Herman (1910 to 1995), Irene (1907 To 1911), and Evelyn (1919 to ?). all born between 1905 and 1920. I have no maternal maiden names but Solomon, et. al.'s parents were Simon Swerlick (1881-1963) and Gertrude (1883 - 1938). Simon's parents were David Swerlick (?-?) and Ruchel (1815-?). And that's as far back as I can go. Thank you. I hope you can help. -- Bob Rosenthal Palatine, IL USA

Yes, there is. Just click the triangle next to Date at the top of the list so that it points down instead of up. -- Alan Shuchat

Are there records available for the town of Majaky? It's very close to Odessa (a suburb?), so if these records exist, are they part of Odessa's records? Thanks for all your responses. Ira Ira Leviton, New York, N.Y.

Hi Deborah, My grandmother's family were Zaslavskys, from Genischesk eventually, before leaving for China in the 1920s sometime. Could they have been in any way connected with the town Zaslav? Or would their second name have come about historically quite separately?
Thank you, Jane Beckerman

Gary,
sure, there is no way to sort all of Alex K's postings in chronological order, but if you will organize and use an established naming convention for all posts, it will facilitate the search and use of files. The keywords are "naming convention". The names of all files could be in this format:
Year>DAKO XXX-XX-XXXX>Name of the file.
So, for example, the file "Списки загиблих від холери по Богуславському повіту. 1831 // ДАКО. Ф. 280. Оп. 174. Спр. 1488" will be listed as
"1831 SAKO 280-174-1488 Списки загиблих від холери по Богуславському повіту." (DAKO, GAKO, ДАКО, ГАКО - all stand for the State Archive of the Kiev Oblast -SAKO).

Re Tuchin and Zaslav: The Kremenets (Volin) district Concordance (an index of name/town combinations found in Kremenets-district records) includes 308 entries for Tuchin and 820 for Zaslav. This means that a person in the records is associated with those towns (e.g., as a birthplace or registration town)--they are not records from those towns. Still, you might find a connection: you can search by town and surname at https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Kremenets/web-pages/database/krem_search_frm.html.

I wish there was a way to sort all of Alex K's postings in chronological order - but unfortunately no. What you can do is if there is a particular wiki page or pages of interest to you containing your towns and you wish to keep current - there is a way to get notified anytime he posts a new item - in the upper right corner of the wiki page you can log in (or create an account with wiki and then log in) and once logged in you can sign up for updates if there is a new item Gary Pokrassa gpokrassa@...
