Using geneanet #france

Harlan Weller

I am trying to trace my wife's French ancestors and have come across a French genealogical site called geneanet.
Does anyone in this group have experience using it?
Is it worth the money to get a premium membership?

I tried it for a bit, but for my purposes it didn't add any value. They may have French records that Ancestry or MyHeritage don't.
I also just logged in with my free membership for a quick look. You can do searches and it will tell you what features need a premium membership. If you want it, it's only $12.50 for 3 months.
It seems many users are European, so if you like to look at other people's trees to get ideas, you'll have a different perspective.

I used it and found it very helpful in learning about a member of my family who moved to France in the 19th century.  None of the information I found on Geneanet was available on Ancestry or any other site I use (including familysearch). I was also able to find and contact current a family members who was totally new to me.  Most helpful for French records.

Hi Harlan,

I found geneanet very good especially for French relatives. The origins of our family is both German and French. I found detailed info on my father's uncle, who emigrated from Frankfurt to Paris in 1900 and later fought for the French against the Germans in WWI. His brother was fighing on the German side. Via Geneanet I found his military records and another Family tree that included him.

So to answer your question GENEANET is very useful as an addition to both MyHeritage and Ancestory.com. It is also a lot cheaper and has some nice functionality which you don't find in MyHeritage and Ancestory..

Kind regards
