location of Givozits? #general

Saul

I’m trying to research my parents and great grandparents. I was told by my Mother that
they lived in Givozits also mentioning Galicia,Kolomya and Bukovina. ( This must be a city , state, geographic area thing.)
I’m not sure which country database to use while researching the Jewishgen site.
   Thank you,
Saul Joseph David

Your town is definitely the Galician town of Gwozdziec, now called Hvizdets in Ukraine, located at coordinates 4835, 2517 about 19 km ENE of Kolomyja. This town had a famous wooden synagogue. The painted ceiling and timber-frame roof of the synagogue was reproduced for the core exhibition of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. See https://sztetl.org.pl/en/towns/g/868-gwozdziec/112-synagogues-prayer-houses-and-others/84822-wooden-synagogue-gwozdziec

If you are interested in the Jewish vital records for this town, please contact me privately at mark@....

Dear Saul
Most of Galicia was in Poland and will be found in the book Jewish Roots by Miriam Weiner  ISBN 0-96565-080-4,  but I can not find the two towns in it.

Hello Saul,

My grandparents were born in Gwozdziec, Kolomea (in 1878 & 1887), Galicia (now Hvizdets, Ukraine).  Surnames that I'm aware of: JUNGERMANN, SPERBER, SCHECHTER, FRIEDMAN, STEIN.

The town had a population of less than 3,000 at the time. Chances are that our ancestors were neighbors or even relatives.

Have you taken a DNA test?  If so and you're interesting in seeing if there's a connection, please send me an email directly to benjamin.kempner@....  I'd need to know which company(ies) you've tested with and under what name.
