The Alter Rebbe Schneur Zalman BORUCHOVITCH of Liadi, founder of Chabad #latvia #rabbinic #russia #belarus

Hilary Osofsky

I'm helping my son-in-law search for a descendant of the Alter Rebbe Schneur Zalman BORUCHOVITCH of Liadi, founder of Chabad (1745-1813). The unindexed, partial genealogies that are online are, not surprisingly, somewhat inconsistent. I'm hoping someone can refer me to an index to the names of his descendants, otherwise to a reliable, complete genealogy that is in English and online.

In that regard, the name for which I'm searching is Rabbi Moses (Michel) BOVSHEVER (variations include BOWSCHEVER and BOWCHEVER), of Liadi, whose wife was Chaya (Charlotta) EDEL (or bat Edel). They were my s-i-l's third great-grandparents.

Based on the approximate dates of birth of the first three children in the list below, 1859-1869, I'm guestimating that Rabbi Moses was born in Liadi c. 1834-1841.

Separately, although I'm only in the beginning stages of research, I would be happy to assist other descendants of  Chaya and Rabbi Moses Bovshever, but they should contact me privately.

Their known children were Samuel, Genesha, Mendel, Siskind, Eleazer, Joseph, Abraham, and David.

Some family members moved from Liadi (also known as Ljady, now Lyady, Belarus) to Riga and Libau, Latvia, others to Moscow.

The names of female descendants include VELIKOVSKY and KONOVICH,

I greatly appreciate any help that can be provided.

Thank you.

My daughter-in-law also has a tradition of being descended from the Alter Rebbe, possibly from his son, the "Mitteler Rebbe," but there is a gap in the line.

Family names in the line between my daughter-in-law and the Alter Rebbe include: HASPEL, ILMER, and GILDEN.

I would appreciate if you shared any useful responses.

Thank you

I am a well documented direct descendant of Shneur Zalman of Ladi, the Alte Lubavitcher Rebbe, he being my fifth great grandfather. I have a database of the descendants of the Alte Rebbe taken from two genealogical books written in Hebrew. The first was written in the 1950s and the second in the 1980s. I will reply privately to those seeking information on their family connections.

Dear Ms. Osofsky,
In your research about early Chabad rebbes, have you come across any with the surname Basin?  My grandfather, born Abram Adolph Basin ~1891 in Starodub, Russia, was the descendant of individuals who were influential in Chabad at the yeshiva in that city, which was closed down by authorities in 1881-82.  My great-grandfather’s name was Solomon Basin.   A known tzadik, he was married to Raisa Kozachkov.  It’s possible, although I cannot document it, that they were related to Shneor Zalman Bassin whose son-in-law was Rabbi Yehoshua Nathan Gnessin of Pochep because of being in close geographic proximity.  I would appreciate whatever information you might have about Chabad rebbes in Starodub and nearby Pochep in addition to any named Basin.  Thank you.

According to family lore (unconfirmed) my grandfather was a decedent of Shneur Zalman of Ladi.
There has been a complication in getting any history. My grandfather emigrated to South Africa and apparently changed his name to become more anglicized. His name was apparently Schneerson but he changed it to Salmenson. I can find no record of either name in Russia.

GF Herman Israel Salmenson,  Yisroel Tzvi ben Rabbi Levi Yitchok (?Salmenson/Schneerson), born in Kovno Russian Empire 1877. I do have a photograph apparently taken with his sister in Vilna.
He married Jennie born Beares (Shayneh bas Yisroel Yidel) born 1881 Rokiskis.
I am not sure if the connection was to Shneur Zalman or to his wife. I know my grandfather had one sister but I suspect there must have been other siblings.
If any of this information sounds familiar I would love to hear about it. I would appreciate the database. Thanks.
