On this headstone Dora's father seems to have an unusual name מתת
I do not see anything like Matet in Jewishgen. Can anyone throw any light on it ?
(Cemetery in UK and families from Poland).

Matat/Matet  is likely to be short for Matityahu

They spoke in Ashkenazi Hebrew (as we see from the Hebrew name transliterated as Devoira) and would have pronounced the father’s name “Mot (rhymes with pot)-iss” which is indeed short for מתתיהו, which they would have pronounced “Mottissyohu”

מתת means gift or reward, from which the name Mattiyahu/Matthew is derived (= gift of the Lord)
