Hungarian Jewish Materials at Yale University #hungary

Vivian Kahn

Bence Erdős sent me the following detailed list of materials that Yale has regarding the Hungarian Jewish community. Dear Vivian                                                                                                           12th February 2021

The above all seem to relate to Auctions  'Talmudical manuscripts--Correspondences between well know Rabbinic Authorities,  --Av Beis Dins--Rabbonim

I have just purchased one--Not on  Jewish Gen's list'   which was written by my grandfather Hersl/Zvi/ Herman Biederman to the Av Beis Din of Hajdunanas  -Dayan Moskovits.
My grandfather was  a highly respected  Talmudical  'giant'--and a very modest one.

Treasure this info.

Best wishes to you all at Jewish Gen

Does anyone know how Yale got these amazing pieces of Jewish history?
Is there any coordination between groups to purchase any of these so bids don't go against each other?

Since the links are to an auction house and not to Yale, I'm confused about the university's ownership. Do we know that Yale has acquired these materials and if so, do we know which library within the university?

I'm friendly with the Judaica archivist at Yale's main library. I'd be happy to ask informally about researcher access to the materials. If that would be helpful, please let me know, along with any other available information -- for example, are the materials newly acquired? Did the main library purchase them, or was it the rare book library, or another entity within the university?

the lot below from the Yale auction was removed, does anyone know why? On one of the sample pages it listed  (in Hebrew) the death of Yisrael Yakov ben (son of) Sara Farkas and brother of Aharon Yoda. While I can't confirm it is a relative it is possible and I was hoping to bid. Does anyone know about this?
