Genealogy Programs #general

Fred Selss

I am looking to purchase a new Genealogy program compatible with Windows 10. I would like it to be able to make Family Trees for 8 to 10 generations with both ancestors and descendants. Making Family Group Charts is also needed. I also would like a place to record notes. And I would like it to show relationships. And be capable of putting children in order of age. And scan for duplicates and errors. A plus if it allows recording of same sex marriages. I don’t want to post on the Internet. A plus also if it can create a book from the information. Ease of use is a must. Can anyone recommend one they are happy with. Please reply privately. Thanks

I use Legacy Family Tree. It is very easy to use and has all that you need. Events can record whatever you want. I'm not sure of same sex marriages, but it will notify you of a 'possible error' if it finds one - so it must. There are lots of 'possible errors' for gaps between children or children born too long after the marriage - my ggrandmother was one of 20 children born to her parernts, so I got those a lot. You can dismiss them.

Fred, what you describe is Family Tree Maker.  I have been using it for fifteen years or so and recommend it highly.  Two other advantages are that it has a lot of tutorials and notes online plus it interfaces with Ancestry.com.  If you are researching documents, then FTM and Ancestry work together very nicely.  You will have to put your tree on Ancestry but you can keep it totally private.  Keeping the two trees, the one on your computer and the other online, in sync is easy and reliable.  Since I have not used other programs, I cannot compare FTM to any others.

Does Family Tree Builder - which works with MyHeritage - work the same way as Bob describes FTM & Ancestry?  That is, can you put all the tree data into Family Tree Builder, and keep it just on the computer - sync it to MyHeritage (which is on-line) but make that all private?
Thanks in advance

I had Rootsmagic and had lots of problems with it working on my Apple computer! Their customer service was horrid.
I ended up buying MacFamily Tree and especially like that it will flag a problem (duplicates, age/date of birth is a conflict, etc) and interfaces with familysearch.org which has millions of Jewish records. It does books, reports, etc. Cost was reasonable. Has some nice features and does allow same sex marriage by changing the sex, which pops up automatically (ex, female if you are adding to a male on there already). You can play with the trial version and see if you like it.
I think it is easy to use but is a pretty powerful program and haven't learned how to do lots of the fun stuff...yet. It does have an easy to use manual that you can download and print or save on your computer for reference. I really haven't had to use the manual much as I find the program pretty intuitive.
Good luck!

I have also been using FTM for close to 10 years. One thing I am curious about...When FTM synchs documents & pictures that it brings down from ancestry, does it keep a copy on the local hard drive or does it only keep a link to where the item is stored on the ancestry.com server?  If it is only a link, that means that you lose all of the items if you ever cancel your ancestry account.

I find Family Tree Maker merge function much more effective that Family Tree Builder’s more-manual method, although Family Tree Maker crashes a lot on me and things get corrupt with the local database. I am glad that master is online for both. The local PC versions are primarily useful for merges for me. I keep my single master on ma local PC in Brother’s Keeper and then manually make the same changes on geni.com.

YMMV

For an image from Ancestry, Family Tree Maker creates a folder for media below the FTM main folder.  So if you have a tree names "tree" the default media folder location would be:

C:\Users\username\Documents\Family Tree Maker\tree Media

If you open the media file from FTM on the bottom to the right of the image would be displayed the file name and the file location.

If you add an image to FTM from your hard drive it asks if you want to create a copy in its' Media folder or reference the copy on your hard drive.  I always keep a copy in the media folder so when I do a full backup I don't have to worry about the files not in the media folder.

I have Family Tree Maker for over 15 years and find that it does all that you want (including same-sex marriages), and is very easy to use.
If you have an Ancestry account, FTM will sutomatically fill in data when it does a search on Ancestry (a big time saver).  You do NOT have to put your tree on Ancestry in order to do automated searches.  You only have to put it on Ancestry if you want Ancestry to notify you of possible links (and you can get the same "suggestions" when you do a web search from FTM).

I gave up on FTM, which I had purchased, since I could not get used to it.

I have been using 'my heritage family tree builder' from the free download instead. At times I had a subscription to the site, but I stopped it. Now I just use the program with my files which are only saved on my PC. When I open the program after it was closed, I get asked if I want to 'sync with family site'. I just dismiss the sugestion, and as far as I understand, there is no leaking of information. I hope I'm right.
Currently I don't see any reason to sync with the on-line site, but the icon is there and I could click it any time. I would not feel sure that a tree would be all private, once you sync with myheritage.

I have used many different Programmes over the years.  I now stick with 2.  One is Family TreeMaker which will do everything you  require. Tech support is by a Chat which can be helpful but not as good as speaking to someone.
The other is a programme called Myhistory. whick likewise does everything you need.  Ease of use is excellent and intuitive.
I think the charting function in MyHistory is far superior to FTM  It s a UK based Company and if you purchase the Programme from them they give excellent Tech support.   This can be by email of by phone.
www.my-history.co.uk

I am not sure about same sex marriages as I have not tried that function but I cannot see why either programme would not allow it.

There is a company, my-history.co.uk, but there is no such program(me). Do you mean Family Historian, which seems to be their program, or something else?

I need to add that the programme from My history site is called Family Historian  not my history but the good tech support i receive comes from buying it from the my-history site rather than direct from the Family Historian site.  I do not have experience of the support from the Family Historian site.

I have been using Brother's Keeper. I do not know how long,
but I purchased it soon after the Pentium chip came out.

I like that I can download or print-to-pdf and link the files to
the person. There are many ways to document and add notes.

The program supports names in Hebrew, also various other names
can be entered in dedicated fields.

I do not like the tree chart output since the demise of the
dot-matrix printer. I use GED export to use a different
program.

For support I write an email and the developer gets back to me
usually within a day. The program and database are completely
offline.

I have not tried most of the reports, but there are many.

For Hebrew, there are 2 option changes. If you have
jpg or png files and not a portrait, create a blank jpg in
Paint and put that as the first jpg file.

I agree with Dahn. I have been using Brother’s Keeper since DOS 3.3 before Windows. The developer is very responsive and corrects any issues quickly. I started it for free as Shareware and found so much value that I registered not long after. The only drawback is not being able to sync with my primary geni.com tree, or my secondary Ancestry and MyHeritage trees.

The Rootsweb genealogy conference is happening this weekend. It's free to attend online. Vendors will be selling their products at a discount. Rootsmagic is on sale for $20. At that price, if you don't like it try something else afterward. Take a look at their site.
I bought it because it is inexpensive. It can pull data from Ancestry, Familysearch and someone else. You can export your tree as a read only file and burn it to a CD or put it on a thumb drive for other family members to enjoy.
You can download the basic version for free as a trial.
To be honest, I don't like their default family tree views. They will require tweaking or cleanup. I don't like their method of imputing sources. It is very structured.
I also bought the Gensmarts software. It will go through your Rootsmagic database and give you very good suggestions on where to find additional data. It will work with other genealogy software too.

The link to the sale price is below.
