Interesting retrospective concerning Washington Heights... The ’upper’ Manhattan neighborhood where so many German Jewish refugees relocated to that it’s been nicknamed: "Frankfurt on Hudson, respectively "The IV. Reich":

Yes familiar with this exhibition. My late wife was interviewed for this as was her brother. She was Marion Bloch, daughter of Alfred and Herta Bloch. It was her grandparents who brought their business, Bloch & Falk, over from Frankfurt. Bloch & Falk became sort of a central institution in the heights. To this day people still talk about the aufschnitt, i.e., cold cuts. They were special as they were kosher but were almost identical to the non-kosher aufschnitt (probably better too). Yes the fourth reich.

You undoubtedly know this, but there was also a branch of Bloch & Falk in Jackson Heights. We often went there when I was a child because my father’s parents lived in Jackson Heights. I recall how happy I was to receive a Cervelatwurst which my parents purchased there when I was away at college. I wonder if there is someplace when can buy them (the all-beef variety) these days.

Hi Ralph,
Yes I had heard about the Jackson Heights store but was never there. There was also one in Inwood but that closed up as well. Where to get aufschnitt these days? Well there is the "competition", i.e., Abeles & Hyman, and maybe one or two others claiming to have cervelatwurst but none of them can touch my father-in-law's product. I know people still lament it to this day. David Cherson
