Help deciphering a town name on passenger Manifest #belarus #records
Hi
Can anyone decipher this town name in Russia? The traveler and her son are in rows 1 and 2 Esther married in Slutsk, Belarus and was living there when first her husband (who is confirmed to have been born in Slutsk) left I had thought it was Slutsk but Yuri DOrn of JHRG did not find the family there (they did find her husband) It is likely that the place here is somewhere in Belarus, in Minsk G. Possibilities are Minsk itself, G/Hlusk, Babruysk https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/24300350?h=16e6a8 The full page is attached Many thanks David -- Best Regards, David Levine San Francisco, CA, USA davidelevine@... Hi
I received two direct messages, one suggesting it was a poorly written version of Slutsk as "there is no location within 30 miles of Slutsk that starts with Rus* or resembles Ruszk. And, the other was the possibility of Kletzk Any other thoughts? -- Best Regards, David Levine San Francisco, CA, USA davidelevine@... Researching:

David:
A link to the entire record (including the first page of this passenger manifest and all the other pages of this ship's manifest) would be useful to compare how letters were formed by this clerk. I could guess that the community might be Klezk (aka Kletzk, which was in Slutsk uyezd). But regardless if one guesses or knows for certain what was written, it is best to have additional sources for confirmation. If you have not yet searched out every record for this immigrant and their family, friends, associates and neighbors in USA records, by all means do so. One record is never enough (especially a record in which information is ambiguous). Emily Garber emilyhgarber@... Phoenix, AZ

David,
It is not the easiest piece of text to read but I would tend to agree that it could be Kletzk. As has already been suggested you will need to find some corroborative evidence either from the US or from Kletzk itself to confirm that this is where your ancestors left from. One source that might help you are the passports that would have been issued to Esther and her son to facilitate travel internally within Russia. I was able to find the internal passports from 1905 issued to my great great grandmother, my great grandmother and my great uncle, when they travelled from Kletzk to London, England. Good Luck with your search. Richard Gilbert Bushey, Hertfordshire
