Hebrew name variants #names

Mike Coleman

Could Shmaryahu on a gravestone be a variant of Schmiel?

Could it be anglicized, in the U.S.A., to Sam?

Many thanks.

Hi
Schmiel is likelier Shmuel in more modern Hebrew, Samuel to us.

Schmerel is more likely to be Shmaryahu. No good American cognate.

But nothing is certain. I have an ancestor Shlomo which corresponds in the Bible to Solomon, but his civil records called him Samuel, probably because his older brother Sholom (a name which also had no good secular cognate) had already gotten the name Salomon. Go figure.

Sam was a very common name for Jews to assume, even if their given name was nothing like Sam.

The two Jewish names are not related.

Anything can become Sam. (Anything can become anything, but Sam was particularly popular.)

I have one family in my data base with two brothers named Sam. One's Hebrew name was שמחה. The other's Yiddish name was זלמן. They arrived in the states at different times.

The name Shmaryahu and Schmiel are two distinctive names. While Shmaryahu שמריהו is a Hebrew name, Schmiel is the Yiddish variant of Shmuel, or Samuel in English.

Do you know for sure the name was Schmiel?  A handwritten Schmiel can look quite similar to Schmerl - if your knowledge comes only from a manuscript, then name could have misinterprted. They look quite similar.

Schmiel

Schmerl
