Just a note of a different possibility.  Someone else I know had the same family name.  I told her it was possibly a transliteration of rashe tevot (acronym) שו"ב, that would be pronounced that way.  But that the acronym was for the words, Shochet uVodek, שוחט ובודק, that is for a ritual slaughterer who also has to check that the animal was kosher.

So one could speculate that perhaps his father or an ancestor was a shochet.
