An uncle named Gershon Lorek who became George Lawrence, is shown as an inmate in this mental facility in NYC in the 1930 Census but does not seem to appear anywhere in the 1940 Census. My assumption is he died there but I have tried without success to find records of the period from the New York from links sent to me by NYC records. I wonder if anyone has had any success finding any ?

Your best bet is to go to stevemorse.org
And search the NYC Death Indexes.
Based on his age you can narrow down the
Possibilities.  Then register at
familysearch.org and ancestry if you have a subscription and see if you can locate the death certificate.

If you can’t the next step is to order a death certificate from the NYC Municipal
Archives , 31 chambers Street in Manhattan.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff,

FamilySearch has NYC death certs transcribed (not all info from cert) but enough to help you identify if it is the correct person.
https://stevemorse.org/vital/nyvital.html?type=death
I found three men named George Lawrence who passed on in Manhattan during the 1930 through 1940 timeframe.  I did not search all five boro's, but you should do that.

Hope this helps,

Sherri Bobish

FamilySearch has the NYC death certificate images through 1948 online, but access is restricted to viewing at FHCs.  Once the Family History Centers re-open, use the info from the search that Sherri gave (you need the date & Certificate Number), locate the appropriate roll from here (this is for Manhattan; search the catalog for the other boros):  https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/753997 then click on the camera icon to view the images.
