Austrian Citizenship #austria-czech

Ronald Cohen

Hello everyone, This is my first message to this list and I would like to say hello.
My mother was born in Vienna in 1922. Both her parents were Polish citizens who had moved to Austria some years earlier. Did my mother automatically become an Austrian citizen by virtue of birth or would she be considered Polish? I would appreciate any help in this regard. Thank you.

Hello Ronald,
Since her parents were Polish citizens, your mother was also considered a Polish citizen.

This may depend on what’s behind your question. It was certainly correct that your mother would have been considered to be a Polish citizen by birth and that she would only have become an Austrian citizen had her father naturalised. But I understand that your mother may now, under the new law allowing descendants of people who fled Austria due to Nazi persecution to claim Austrian citizenship, be considered to be de facto Austrian. If that’s something that interests you and any other descendants of your mother, you should send a query to the Consular Section of the Austrian Embassy in Washington DC.
