Ever Heard of Neimark, Austria-Hungary> #austria-czech #hungary
Andreas Schwab
This map is about Neumark, the Region. From neu = new and Mark = border state. Neumarkt is from neu and Markt = market or market town. In Polish, Nowy = new and targ = market.
The OP wanted to find a town, not a region. Also, the Neumark region was in Prussia, not Austria-Humgary. -- Andreas Schwab, Montreal, Canada

Jonathan,
It may be: Nowy Targ [Pol], Neumarkt am Dohnst [Ger], Nový Targ [Slov], Neimarkt [Yid], Neumarkt, Novi-Targ, NoymarkRegion: KrakowOn the Nowy Sącz 1890 Census there is a TRAUENSTEIN family who are listed as permanent residents of Nowy Targ. And, Hungarian Births have this: KORN / TRAUNSTEIN, Eva Father b. Neumarkt, two surnames given for father in register If you do a phonetic search for TRAUNSTEIN at: https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/all/ you can see more detail on the above mentioned records, and since I did only a very quick search I would imagine you may find more relevant records. Good luck in your search, Sherri Bobish Searching: RATOWSKY / CHAIMSON (Ariogala / Ragola, Lith.) WALTZMAN / WALZMAN (Ustrzyki Dolne / Istryker, Pol.) LEVY (Tyrawa Woloska, Pol.) LEFFENFELD / LEFENFELD / FINK, KALTER (Daliowa/ Posada Jasliska, Pol.) BOJDA / BERGER (Tarnobrzeg, Pol.) SOKALSKY / SOLON / SOLAN / FINGER(MAN) (Grodek, Bialystok, Pol.) BOBISH / APPEL (Odessa?)

There were (at least) 4 towns that were once named Neumarkt; these are their current names:
• Nowy Targ, Poland (previously Austria)
• Sroda Slaska, Poland (previously Germany)
• Targu-Mures, Romania (previously Hungary)
• Tirgu Secuiesc, Romania (previously Hungary)
Do you know the approximate timeframe for Yetta or any of her immediate family? I can't speak for the other towns, but I do see a Jentel Traunstein in our Nowy Targ records project. (These records are not yet online.)
While the Polish Archives has not yet scanned this set of Jewish vital records, JRI-Poland has privately photographed and indexed them.
Please contact me privately for more information about the 4 records that I see connected with the family of this Jentel Traunstein.

Spelling variation. Probably one of several towns named Neumark or Neumarkt. Note that in native Austrian dialect "eu" is pronounced /ai/ as in eye, which in German is usually spelled <ei>.

Neimark, Austria-Hungary? I just received an email from a cousin saying that our great great grandmother Yetta Traunstein was from Neimark, Austria-Hungary. I'm not finding anywhere called Neimark, even in the Town Finder
