Spindler- Grondo #belarus #records #russia

Hey
My great grandfather was Simon or Sam Spindler. Born in Grodno Poland 1888. I know his father- per death cert-was Alexander. Sam's mother was Rachel. Alexander never made it to USA-my family has said he "died young." Alex's wife Rachel remarried a name Kopitinick. Sam came to USA through Galveston in 1912-and settled in Kansas City. Sam had brother Yankel, a sister Sarah , a sister Mashke. Sam was raised by his grandmother Elke. Sam was married in Grodno in 1912 before leaving for America. His wife- Sarah Dovidovich (maiden)-came to USA via canada in 1914. Sarah born 1892. Ive dug around looking for Alexander's parents. I see many Spindler recs on jewishgen Im almost certain some of these are their's-but I dont know best translations of what Alexander would be or even if...its something else? I see some Dovidovich's as well -Sarah's parents were Frieda and Meyer. Hoping for some help here on Alex's parents...and possible recs on Sarah's parents...because Im stumped! Art Pronin

Art,
When searching Spindler on the JewishGen databases I suggest using a phonetic or soundex search. Spindler is sometimes spelled Shpindler / Szpindler. Simon's manifest has his first name spelled Szymon. There is a WW1 draft card for Sam Spindler in Kansas City that states he served three years in the Russian army. Is this draft card for your Sam Spindler? I wonder if there are extant records from his military service in Russia that may shed light on his father. Good luck in your search,
Sherri Bobish
Searching: RATOWSKY / CHAIMSON (Ariogala / Ragola, Lith.) WALTZMAN / WALZMAN (Ustrzyki Dolne / Istryker, Pol.) LEVY (Tyrawa Woloska, Pol.) LEFFENFELD / LEFENFELD / FINK, KALTER (Daliowa/ Posada Jasliska, Pol.) BOJDA / BERGER (Tarnobrzeg, Pol.) SOKALSKY / SOLON / SOLAN / FINGER(MAN) (Grodek, Bialystok, Pol.) BOBISH / APPEL (Odessa?)

Aleksander can be Sender. But I have seen Eli listed as Alex in a number of records. Eli was short for Eliya or Elias. possibly Eliahu in hebrew.

Belarus: GUTTWOCH/GOODMAN and ZISSERMAN in Volchin; BUSHMITZ in Vysokaye. Ukraine: TRAUB and JANOVSKY in Kolki, Sofievka, Radomysl, and Zhytomyr; WEISMAN or ROSENBERG.

I do see a Ariia Spindler in records-in Grodno. But born in 1841. Sam Spindler was born 1888-Im not sure the same man? Could Ariia be Alex?

Hi Art,
I have been working with an archive researcher from Belarus and he recently sent me the extract below of a record he found in Belarus's central archives. He sent it to me because the woman mentioned, Feyga Badash, and my great grandmother Chana Badash, were sisters (Movsha Badash being my g-g-grandfather). I thought you might be interested as Feyga's husband Mordukh Shpindler, being from Grodno and born about 1869, may well be a brother or first cousin of your g-g-grandfather Alexander. 1894. Personal information of residents from foreign passport applications, Grodno guberniya. April 15: Mordukh son of Neakh Shpindler, 25 years old; Jewish petty bourgeois from town Grodno, and his wife Feyga daughter of Movsha Badash, 22 years old applied for a foreign passport for a trip to abroad. He requested to send his passport to town Belsk, Walkovysskaya Street, Kaplan’s house. Fond 1/24/1184
Researching: SPERBER, JOLLES, SCHONHEIT (Western Ukraine) ROSCH, KRELL, NEUFELD (Western, Ukraine) SEGALOWICH (SIEGEL in U.S.), BADASH, (Belarus) LERER, FIDELMAN, MALAMED (Eastern Poland & Warsaw) BERLINSKY, GOLDWEBER, BUCHBINDER (Eastern Poland)

Thank you Richard. I have 3 names for Sam's siblings- Yankel, Mashke, Sarah. He had one brother and 2 sisters but maybe your Mordukh is related. What is Mordukh in english?
