Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean? #sephardic #events
David Mendoza
The idea of Jewish pirates was popularised by Ed Kritzler's book Jewish
Pirates of the Caribbean. Ed was a much-loved personality with a deep interest in Jamaican history, but how accurate was his research? As well as his work, there has been a short film, a number of articles, and the phenomenon is all over social media. How much truth is there to it? Who are the people presented as Jewish pirates, and what is the evidence for piracy? Ton Tielen has reviewed the sources, and has studied the Pallache and the Portuguese-Sephardic Cohen families. He has thirty years' experience in Sephardic research, and is the expert on the Amsterdam Portuguese-Jewish archives. Ton is a founder-admin of The Sephardic Diaspora group on Facebook and co-host of Sephardic World. He was formerly archivist of the Netherlands Red Cross. The meeting is on Sunday 16 January 2022, at 11am in LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm Paris/Amsterdam and 9pm Jerusalem. Patrons can join us on Zoom.
