"The Hare with the Amber Eyes" -- great JewishGen presentation! #JewishGenUpdates #education

Renee Steinig

Thank you, JewishGen, for yesterday's extraordinary presentation, "The Hare with Amber Eyes”: A Glimpse into some Jewish Families of Vienna, featuring author and artist Edmund de Waal in conversation with Randy Schoenberg.

De Waal spoke passionately and sensitively about legacy and memory -- subjects that mean so much to genealogists.
Kudos to Randy, Avraham Groll, Karen Franklin, and the others involved in creating this event, and to Edmund de Waal for movingly sharing his family's story. For those who missed the program (or want to watch it again!), it's at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idhzy7hcp7Y .

I so agree with Renee - an outstanding event. I've already watched it again and passed the link to friends.

I was particularly amused towards the end when Edmund produced a photograph his father had recently given him, saying 'I didn't know I had it," as in the book, the following is related:

When de Waal is quite advanced in his family research, his father comes down to his studio to join him for lunch and produces a small white book from a supermarket bag. His father doesn’t know what the book is all about but feels his son should have it ‘for his archive’. In this album are beautiful pen-and-ink images of family members from 1878-1903 – a real family treasure.

De Waal remonstrates with his father asking him how he could possibly not know he had this and says: ‘What else have you got in the suitcase under your bed’?

All our families have our 'hidden treasures'!

I totally agree with the above.  The book was terrific, as is his "Comodo", and he brought out excellent points.  He showed a painting of his father, an Anglican priest, looking "rabbinical"!

Thank you to all involved in putting this together!

I just found the link to this lecture and clicked on it.  I have read the book and also seen the Ephrussi Palace in Odessa (our guide was shocked that I had read the book and heard of the family) in addition to knowing the buildings on the Ringstrasse in Vienna when my husband and I were there for several months on Sabbatical.  I have always found the story of the Ephrussi family down the ages fascinating and this discussion was unbelievable.  Thank you so much for making it available in recording format.  The time differences between the various countries makes participating online difficult.

I also want to compliment the fantastic JewishGen presentation, "The Hare with Amber Eyes."

Mr. de Waal's talk was one of the best and most moving that I have ever seen.

I hope that JewishGen will have Mr. de Waal speak again, as I think we all could have listened to him for many more hours!

Thank you,

I did not see the presentation (time differences etc) but read the book when it first came out about ten years ago. There was also a BBC TV programme on it at the time, which was excellent and is recommended. I wrote to Edmund de Waal thanking him for his book at the time, and to his credit he replied to me saying how it had been well received. My last holiday before lockdown in summer 2019 was on the French Riviera, and we visited the amazing Ephrussi palace there,  which I think was on Cap Ferrat near Nice. Vogue magazine was doing a fashion shoot there at the time, which shows how luxurious it was.  The French Ephrussis married into the Rothschilds, making them into an exclusive dynasty.  They are quite some ancestors to have.

Dear JewishGen,
I, too, raise my voice in thanks for the remarkable JewishGen presentation featuring Edmund de Waal in conversation with Randy Schoenberg. It was an extremely moving presentation by Mr. De Waal, full of lessons that I find myself repeating to others, since the lecture — no family history is unimportant, all lives are worthy of being remembered in whatever ways we can, there are always things (photographs or letters ignored, squirreled away) to be discovered in the attic, confidences and emotions to be revealed. De Waal was an exceptional teacher in this.
Thank you, JewishGen, for pointing out not just how to honor the past but to live nobly in the present.
