Viewmate 97811 - Translation of Hebrew script on headstone #translation

Alan Reische

My paternal grandfather's headstone is pictured at
https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM97811. I've
requested translation of the Hebrew script and have already received one
very helpful response. I look forward with interest to other thoughts
and comments as well.

Good  morning,

Here lies or here is buried (two letter abbreviation on top)

Nachum Aryeh son of reb Yesha’yahu Gavriel

Shalom, Malka Chosnek

My only correction of the posted Viewmate comment is that the Hebrew name on the tombstone of  ישעיהו (Yeshayahu) is normally translated as Isaiah, and not Joshua, a different given name. Joshua in Hebrew is written as יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ.

Thanks to all who responded. Dan's comment corresponds with other information I have. Isaiah can be shortened into 'Shiah' or 'Scheim' as a nickname, and then into the Anglicized 'Simon'.

I hang my head in shame.  I've just gone back and added the following response to the ViewMate post:

"I am returning to correct my error re the father's name.  I correctly read it as Yeshayahu Gavriel, but in my comments underneath, my brain did a flip, changed Yeshayahu to Yehoshua, and then said that this is Joshua.

The others who commented to your post in the "main groups" discussion are correct, of course.  Yeshayahu is Isaiah."

Apologies!

Fredel’s very fast initial response allowed me to establish a connection between my paternal grandfather and a name on a Hamburg manifest. That consequently was the final and critical piece of the puzzle, allowing me for the first time in 10+ years of research to establish a clear narrative for the family’s 1880 emigration from Galicia. Any error pales (bad pun) in significance next to that.
