Gedcom no-nos? #general

I fear that I have been self-sabotaging my gedcom-ability by putting punctuation like quotes and parens in some of the vital fields, or by using terms in dates like abt or aft. I also have some floating tree fragments that are not connected to my main tree. Is there a place to educate myself about how to ensure that gedcom files will work?

Each software can handle data differently regardless of what is passed
from the GED file.

Also the "options"  of some software packages may have ways to change standards.

I use Brother's Keeper and Agelong Tree software and have come on
data labels that were not transferable. The label is HUSB, WIFE etc.

Your problem seems to be the data. Data is handled by the software not by
GEDCOM.
