Family Moscow in Amsterdam #general

Dexter Moscow

Your help would be much appreciated.

I have traced my fathers family to Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Their records go back 3 generations but I cant find out where they were before that.

Haim Moscow

BIRTH Amsterdam Holland

Haim is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

As the name is Moscow, I assume Russia and would appreciate confirmation

Keep well and safe,

Dexter Moscow

The earliest Moscow family documented is for Joseph Hijman Moscow, born 1828 in Amsterdam:

He had a son named Hijman born January 24, 1860.

Both, according to their population registrations (their are images available on these links) show they were both born in Amsterdam.

Would that be Hyman Moscow born 2-5-1849? Married to Esther Wolf van Wesel 2-6-47?
Both from cigarmakers families.

His father was Isaac, 16-8-1825
Their name (as far as I've seen it) was written as Moscou.

Both Joseph and his son Hijman are shown to be born in London, not Amsterdam, here

Dexter,

Without any intention to confuse you, I would like to "contribute" to your Moscow search. Years ago, after a period of genealogical confusion, I was surprised to find proof that my "Mostkov" family had nothing to do with the town Moscow, as I had believed. The name was actually Mostkovi, and originated from Russian. It contains the word for bridge, мост (read Most), the family probably lived next to a town's bridge, when given their surname. That part of my paternal family came from Lithuania, later Novogroduk and moved to Minsk in Belarus. For all ethnic purposes, however, we are Litvish (Lithuanian) Jews. This may well be unrelated to your specific challenge, but you may consider to investigate that line as well; maybe my original mistake can teach us all something about prejudiced ideas without no basis.

Good luck,

Seth Jacobson

If it was Hyman Moscow born 2-5-1849:
his line goes back to a Hyman Wolf Moscou, shoeshiner, b. around 1799 in Amsterdam, married 1823 in Amsterdam. On the marriagecert. his parents are Wolf Moscou (b. abt. 1746) and Sara Hijman. Bride, Groom, Parents all living in Amsterdam.

I don't see name adoptions to Moscou or similar, so was the name before 1811? I see a marriage in 1796 between a Wolf Hijman Levie and a Sara Hijman in Amsterdam, they were both born there. The same Wolf? The name of his mother (his witness) is Hester Benjamins). He signs his name in jiddish, may he wrote something different? Can someone transcribe that?

On Dutchjewry.com (18th Century Ashekenazi) I saw someone by the name of Moscou Levie
