Town named Chernastra/Cherustra/Cherna in Russian Empire #russia #ukraine
Alene Lipshaw
I’m very interested in finding the answer. The only location for my pgg looks like Cherusse. And the only town with a name similar to that is near Moscow where there wasn’t a Jewish community and so wouldn’t have had a need for a kosher butcher. Let’s see if someone can help us!

Could it be Chernovitsi Romania, now part of Ukraine? I have aunts and uncles who were born there- From the web:
"Chernivtsi is a city in Southwestern Ukraine. It is situated on the upper course of the Prut River, and is the administrative center of Chernivtsi Oblast, which includes the Ukrainian part of Bukovina." and also"After being designated the capital of the new Habsburg crown province of Bucovina in 1849, Czernowitz enjoyed several decades of development, a process stimulated by the economic and political emancipation of Jews, which was completed after 1867." Good luck. Aline Petzold St. Paul MN |

Thank you, everyone! After further research, Cherna/Chernustra is most likely Cherny Ostrov from the original post.
