I would like to thank the people who responded to my message, resulting in several pieces of information about, Hans Heilpern, and his association with the swim world in Vienna pre-WWII. This all has deepened my knowledge about his early adult life in Vienna, verified places he was employed in swim venues, and also educated me a bit about the sport club, "Hakoah."
It started with an individual in California with whom I had lengthy phone conversation about "Hakoah" and members of their swim team her parents had known. Then there were the individuals who tipped me off about an Israeli documentary done on the sports club, "Watermarks," which was fascinating and educational. Then, Megan Lewis, at the US Holocaust Museum, contacted me about materials they had, one of which mentioned Hans, and some I was then able to attain through an inter-library loan (at home). From there, Susanne Betz, found/passed along a wealth of information from Vienna, not only about "Hakoah," but also about some other swim organizations mentioned on Hans' Emigration documents. From there, I was led to a Professor Bowman here in the US for a bit more guidance. If I missed anyone I'm sorry. WOW, I was overwhelmed by the time & effort of all these people on my behalf with this research. Thank you SO much to this community of fellow researchers at JewishGen, and those not a part of the organization, but found through it. I deeply appreciate all the assistance from these individuals. It means a lot to me to learn more about the life of another of my ancestors. And the search goes on . . . Sincerely, -- Leah Heilpern Snider Silverdale, Washington/ USA |

My father, Alexander Uszer Zuchman, who came from Poland in 1920, was a manager of the Hakoah soccer team/club in NYC during the 1920s. I have a photo someplace and he talked about it. Is there information available anyplace about the Hakoah organization in NYC in the 1920s?

Hakoach Wien was also a famous Jewish soccer club, well known in the 1930s. My late mother and some originating Viennese people spoke about Hakoach Wien. In my youth years, when I was playing soccer with the youth team of the Maccabi soccer club, there was a player originating from Vienna, who played in the first team of Maccabi; he spoke regularly about his youth time with Hakoach Wien before WWII.

I second Renee's recommendation: Watermarks is a wonderful, inspirational film. I watched it several times.

Leah Heilpern Snider <sniderlh@...> asked about Hakoah Wien, one of the places where her husband's cousin worked as a swimming instructor and trainer. Watermarks, a wonderful Israeli documentary released in 2004, tells the story of this famous sports club. More recently, its director, Yaron Zilberman, discussed the film -- and the club -- at NYC's Museum of Jewish Heritage: |

Come to find out in reading one of the 1938-39 Emigration documents for my father's cousin, Hans Heilpern, he worked as a swimming instructor and trainer. This was news to me. A couple places he listed were: Thermalstrandbad Voslau, Michaelerbad Wien, and Schwimmklub "Hakoah" Wien. I was able to Google Voslau & Hakoah and got a little general information, but found nothing for Michaelerbad. Perhaps, it doesn't exist any more, or the name has changed. Is anyone familiar with any of these places and what the work might have been like; the facilities? Maybe some of you who live(d) in Wien, had family members who were swimmers in any of these places and/or working with a trainer, (an Olympics hopeful), or maybe some people have old photos . . . It sounds like Hakoah was quite a club back in the day, for lots of sports; with aquatics, both swimming & water polo seemed big. I recall my father talking about playing water polo for several years, and I wonder if he did it there.
I would love to hear from any swimmers, water polo players, historians or spots fans who could make my head "swim" with information about the Hakoah swim club in particular and what requirements there might have been to join, etc. If I was really lucky someone out there might have had a family member trained by, or learned to swim from --- Hans Heilpern. Any information, stories/memories, records would be of interest and most appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely -- Leah Heilpern Snider Silverdale, Washington/ USA |
