Some of my relatives came from Liebenau , Lower Saxony, Germany. Specifically, Simon Hammerschlag was born there in 1770, and he married "Rael," born around the same time. I plan to be in that area in mid-October. Some of the family came to the U.S. around 1843, landing in Savannah and Philadelphia. Does anyone have info on the Jewish community in Liebenau and how I might obtain records that would help trace the lineage prior to and since 1770? Is there a municipal office or other institution (did churches at one time keep community records?) that might have records (marriage certificates, birth and death info)? Thanks!!
