BACKMAN in Montreal #canada #poland

From experience with my family................................
I had a similar situation.  I suspected that my great grandfather's surname in Europe was Susselovitch.  When he arrived in Montreal, he used the surname Saxe/Zaxe/Zaac from day one.  The was nothing in the Canadian records of him ever being a Susselovitch.  Then I found the ship manifest of his arrival in Montreal in the late 1880s, in which he is listed as Susselovitch.  That confirmed it.

Therefore, I suggest looking for the ship manifests for the Backmans in Montreal.  This can be a very painstaking task, because many - if not most - of those who emigrated to Montreal traveled on ships to some other North American seaport (for example: New York, Boston, St. John NB) and then continued overland to Montreal.  This, of course, was due mainly to the Canadian winter, when ships could not navigate the ice-covered St. Laurent River.
Good luck! :)

I've checked all the obvious sources. What I can't tell is which, if any, of the other Backmans in Montreal were originally Bachrachs. That's the specific information I'm seeking.

I don't know which resources you have already used in your research, so I'll assume you didn't comb through these for more information:
(1) Lovell's directories for Montreal over the years.
(2) JOWBR database for Montreal cemeteries.  The vast majority of gravestones have been photographed.
(3) Montreal obituaries - best through Newspapers.com, if you can access it.

Looking for information on all families from Montreal, Quebec, Canada named BACKMAN. Having done some research on the family of Abraham Hillel BACHRACH which became BACKMAN in Canada, I'm trying to find out whether several other BACKMAN families were related. Were they all originally named BACHRACH?

At least some of the BACHRACH->BACKMAN children were born in Narewka, Poland. I have no information on others.

Examples of names:
Benny BACKMAN (ca 1877-1951) Bentzion ben Meir
Meyer BACKMAN (1889-1974) Meier Michael ben Shmarye
Chaim/Hyman BACKMAN (ca 1858-1924) Chaim ben Simcha Aaron

If you have any connection to these families, please get in touch.
