Beginner query: ship manifests #israel

Trudy Greener

I found my father on the manifest of the ship Romania, which arrived in Haifa in June of 1925. I had known the date and ship to look for, but had actually looked a few times and missed his name - very hard to read through all the lists!  He later continued on to the US, after working a few years in Palestine. The Central Zionist Archives had led me to the list in the first place.

One thing further.  I suggest you send in a request to the Central Zionist Archives to ask them if they have any material on your cousin.
Chances are good that they may have an immigration card on him and perhaps even a file with biographical information.

Szmeredi is indeed spelled that way in Hebrew.  The first name is Shaul.  He immigrated to Israel on December 21, 1950.
I cannot tell you what the other numbers mean.  His destination: a ma'abara in Israel.

Hello Shimi,
I found a name that may be a cousin I am searching for who emigrated to Israel from Budapest, Hungary after the war.
It is on page 314 of List of Immigrants 1936-1951. Finance Department N-S.
URL is https://www.archives.gov.il/archives/#/Archive/0b0717068001a9a2/File/0b071706806dd096
The family name is written סמרדי.  In Hungarian it was Szemeredi (SZ is pronounced like an English S). Is this how to spell Szemeredi in Hebrew?
The given name looks like שאוכ.  Can you tell me how that is pronounced in English?

Can you tell me the meaning of the rest of the numbers and words on that row?
Thank you for your help.

Hello,
I am sorry to say but ...
The lists I forwarded, as much as I know, are not indexed and no OCR was made.
They are simple PDF files.
There are two types:
1. Single year list sorted by the date of arrival to Israel
2. Multi years list for the first  one or two family Hebrew letters sorted by the family name.
So to find the person you want you have to know his family name and given name and approximately when he came to Israel.
Sometimes there are multiple persons with and you can not be sure which of the names is your family.
A cross of these 2 list can help,

Best regards,
Shimi Karni

Hi Shimy

So these manifests were not indexed yet so we can find them by name?

You need to review the list to locate the name. Searching by name on the website will not locate the manifest.

Hello,
The whole lists of the immigrants to Israel yo can find in the following link:
It also contains explanations on how to search.
The only disadvantage is that you need to know Hebrew.
If you are familiar with the Hebrew language, OK.
If not please write to me privately and I will try to help you with the search.
Best Regards,
Shimi Karni,
Israel

I'm a beginner at this, and this is probably a really basic question, but where would I find ship manifests for immigrants to Palestine in 1927 and subsequent years? I believe two siblings of my late mother's birth family were trying to get there in 1927 (my mother was adopted).

Thank you!
