Most of the 2.7 million images of actual records linked from JRI-Poland search results are supplied via the Internet from the Polish State Archives (PSA). These images of Polish, Russian (Cyrillic alphabet), German, Yiddish or Hebrew records generally do not have unique URL’s and are part of large sets that we meticulously label in order to provide you with a “click to view” option.
These are mostly vital records (births, marriages, deaths or divorces) but they may also be population and census lists, guild lists, Judenrat records, tax lists, cemetery and burial lists, notary records, identity cards and passports – in short, all types of documents. It is our volunteers who identify, organize and bring all this information to you in a digestible format.
At the beginning of November, the PSA detected an attack and quickly took down their website to safeguard their data. They have publicly stated that no data has been lost and that public access will be restored very soon. The most recent announcements indicate that that a stronger security application has been implemented and the reopening of access will be highly controlled and happen in stages. Last week, in-person access became available in Reading Rooms of Archives branches around Poland. As of this writing, the PSA has announced that it is possible to access their website https://szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/ through the internet by users within Poland. If you use a VPN or a Polish internet provider, you may be able to access their system now as well. For those of us outside of Poland, we may still have to wait a little while yet for access. Meanwhile, please bear with us. Understand that the JRI-Poland.org website is not broken and that the links are not working for requests TO the Polish State Archives website because of the careful implementation of an improved security system. The AGAD branch of the PSA works on a separate computer system and server. To date, links to images of our Galician records housed in AGAD data have been unaffected by the PSA’s security maintenance work.

Many chapters of Yizkor books are accounts of events and Jewish life after the turn of the 20th century, particularly the memories of those who survived the brutal years that began with the rise of Nazism. So, “Belchatow in the Year 1898” from the Yizkor book of that Polish town caught my eye because it promised a snapshot of an earlier time when it was under the thumb of the Russian Empire.
Belchatow was mostly populated by Jews with the few Christians being Shabbos-goyim. It was a town of small wood and brick houses, low with pointy roofs, covered with grey wooden shingles, on which grew moss. Others were covered with tar paper.
It was a cloistered place: “The shtetl was open on all sides, but the world did not enter.” People did not know of books, of newspapers, of periodicals. The six weekdays were filled with work, which took up all of the people’s interest and all of their enjoyment in life. Eating, sleeping were in order to be able to work.
When people became sick, the shtetl Jew did not immediately run for the doctor. First, they used their own remedies: a wet handkerchief for a headache; wolfberry for vomiting; fennel tea and castor oil for stomach aches; garlic and pepper and ground horse teeth on burned coals – for toothaches. If that didn’t work, they went to the apothecary. When leeches and cupping glasses needed to be applied or a tooth had to be pulled, they called the feldsher [barber-surgeon]. Finally, after a remedy against the evil eye had been said and the women prayed in the synagogue for a cure, the doctor was called.
The shtetl did not know of childhood. Boys went at a young age to the kheder where they often suffered the tyranny of the teacher. It was “a prison in which the child was held from the morning until night” and learned only the “Holy Language” and not writing, arithmetic, history, science or geography. Later, the young ones left for an apprenticeship.
The teaching of the trade began with the boy as an apprentice, usually 13 years old when he was rented out for four years — years of “pure slavery.” Afterwards, he became a journeyman, hoping to marry and become a boss.

I am trying to find information on my great uncles that remained in Mogilev after my grandfather Louis Berlin immigrated to NY. These were two letters that were written. I was told that the brothers names were possibly Leon and Charles Berlin. One letter was on the back of a military photograph. Also is the military photograph the uniform of the Russian army?

I've attaches 2 forms from the Krakow ghetto filled out in German for 2 youths who had been born in Sokal. I would mainly like to know if their parents' names and/or circumstances are mentioned. If this isn't the case, is there a name of a guardian or another family member?
