Orderings Immigration Records from USCIS Genealogy Program #records #usa
Elana Broch
The results of my index search for my grandmother have arrived (took more than 1 year). It didn’t mention the A-file for my grandmother, but when I went in to order the C-file (as a Record Request with Case ID), the A-file was listed (for an additional 65 dollars). I went ahead and ordered it, but wonder if this has happened to anyone else. Elana Broch Lawrenceville, NJ Searching Holler, Broch, Lichtman |

Hi Elena:
I ordered the Visa files for my grandmother who never became a citizen. I knew she had come to New York twice - in 1926 and then 1938. Each file was only a few pages, but USCIS charged me $130. I had previously ordered a C-file for a person who was not a relative. That file had 505 pages and was $65. Does not seem fair, but that is the way it is. Happy Hanukkah. Hi all
I have some general information on this, and some specific comments for the individuals on this thread, below. If you attended the 2022 IAJGS, and have the Fleetwood recording, you can consult the USCIS panel I organized with Alec Ferretti and Marian Smith for additional details. You can also learn more about the specific record series at RecordsNotRevenue.com, a campaign to push USCIS to do better. Please note the current wait time for an Index search is 210 business days, and an additional 240 business days wait for records. If you are unhappy with this service (you should be!) write to your member of Congress or your Senator about it. If you respond directly to me I can assist with how to communicate the issue. Specific individual comments below: Elana Does it say A-File or AR-2? There is a big difference. Can you provide additional details so I can fully answer the question? Mark Different time periods and the laws in place at the time influence the amount of detail collected on an individual. It's comparing apples and oranges! Michel Please do not waste your money submitting a request to USCIS for a ship manifest from the 1865-1875 time period. They will not have the information you are seeking. It is not within the timeframe of the records they hold. Renee Carl Washington DC policy advisor to RecordsNotRevenue.com |
