Submitting Inquiries to Arolsen Archives #holocaust

USHMM's names database is at www.ushmm.org/online/hsv/person_advance_search.php, which includes names from the Arolson Archives but also many, many archival collections.

As a general rule, Arolsen Archives has less information the farther east you go.  For Romania, the best information is for those from northern Transylvania.  However, the USHMM name database includes many lists from other parts of Romania.  For Ukraine, there is some material in the Arolsen Archives for eastern Galicia, but again the USHMM names database might provide more results.

Try the U.S.H.M.M.

They have many documents from Arolsen that have yet to appear on Arolsen's own site.

Explore documents of the Arolsen Archives (arolsen-archives.org)

In addition to conducting your own research, you can submit inquiries to the Arolsen Archives. Not all documents are online yet, so we will be happy to help you clarify the fates of individuals and trace their paths of persecution.

Send inquiry

Hi all,
I could not find answers to the following questions on Arolsen Archives site itself, so I wondered if those with experience in submitting inquiries (https://arolsen-archives.org/en/search-explore/inquiries/submit-inquiry) can answer:

  1. Does the archive provide (additional) documents only on individuals that show up in online searches in the archive ?
  2. Does the archive (possibly) contain info on Jews held at German camps only - or those tracing Romanian, Ukrainian Jews might be lucky as well ?
  3. I see one can only submit one inquiry per one single individual. I would like to inquire or any documents for an entire family. Is there no way out of having to do this one-by-one ?
  4. What kind of documents should one expect to find ? Stuff different than what is already shared in online searches ?

Thanks in advance,
