Missing record in Manitoba archives #canada
Paul Silverstone
In 1928 my cousin Kenneth EPSTEIN died tragically in northern Manitoba when his canoe overturned and he was drowned. He was
up there trading with the Indians for fur pelts, and his death made the headlines in the newspapers. I cannot find his death record in the Manitoba Vital Records archive. He died on May 26, 1928 at Norway House, Manitoba. His birth on Aug. 19, 1900 at Selkirk, Manitoba, is missing also. I believe the records may be missing because of trouble reading the handwriting. I tried writing to the archive, but received no reply. Paul Silverstone paulh@... West Vancouver, BC |

Sarah L Meyer
Can you search with only his first name and the first names of his parents? It also sounds like he should be in the 1901, 1911 and 1921 Canadian Censuses. Perhaps the handwriting may be better there - or you may find the key misspelling.

Hi
There are also the 1906, 1916 and 1926 Censuses of the Prairie Provinces. Here you can search all Censuses at once: https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census2/index Are you sure that your Kenneth Epstein was born in 1900? There is one in the Censuses who must have been born in 1901. Regards Corinne Iten Switzerland |

At Manitoba Vital Records Search
https://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php a search can be done by first name only, surname only, or location only. A search for Kenneth (or Ken), with no surname, does not find him. A search for EPSTEIN with no first name does not find him. And, a search by location only (Norway House) does not find him (two deaths in Norway House are listed for 1928.) The JOWBR does list a Kenneth EPSTEIN buried at Shaarey Zedek in Winnipeg. No year or age is listed. This page has contact info for Shaarey Zedek: https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/jowbrshow.php?id=CAN-02273 Perhaps Shaarey Zedek will have info on file that will be helpful in your search, Good luck in your search,

Patience. After sending in the paperwork and payment, it took almost a year. Records that far back have to be searched manually. Good luck

I found Kenneth Epstein age 8 months listed in the 1901 Census of Canada -- Manitoba. (Completed in June) https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1901&op=img&id=z000019226. So he was born in mid-1900. Keep looking -- you will break through this brick wall eventually. Patricia Masniuk from Manitoba masniukgen@...
