Hello everybody,
I would like to give you an update on several sets we worked on from
1808!
These records are very important for several reason:
- these are the oldest records we have so far;
- they are from time when Bessarabia region was part of Moldova Principality, and not yet Russian Empire;
- records were written in Russian, even though Russia was not ruled that land yet;
- it was Russian occupying army which conducted these Revision;
- for some of the towns, in addition to list of Jews in that town, there are also Jews citizens of Russia who arrived with Russian army to the area;
We have already completed such records for Bendery; Akkerman; Kiliya; Khotin (family list).
One more set left is also for Khotin, but just with Head of Household names, # of family members and profession/business.
The problem I have working on the set is that professions/businesses are not clear. The writing might be not clear, but also if I can read the word, in some cases I do not know what it means. Before contacting Russian department at Harvard, I would like to share these records with you and get your help.
I attached one of the images for these records (total number of images-8).
Image includes records for Armenians and Christians. Jews are with 1 at the third column.
There are no surnames, because most Jews did not have surnames yet in that region. Also in some case there are father's names.
There are men here, except in several cases the head of household is a widow.
First Jewish record is for Perla Zhidovin Widow... and her family is of 6 and she was Шинкарка - Tavern keeper.
Some names ahead are not clear too, but I want to focus on profession.
Any idea of these 3 might be?

It is written in Russian, something like Raiver or Raiber or Rashoer? but what that is? I think the rest on this page I understand.
Other pages have many professions I do not understand.
Interesting that for number of people it is written
Khakham. I would be glad to put other pages for help, if there is an interest.
All the best,
Yefim Kogan
