Help transcribing passenger records. #general #usa #records
Sharon
Hi all,
Many of you have been very helpful in assisting me in finding the passengers list of my great-great uncle. Thank you! I found the list, but I could not find William and Rosa Braunstean, I now think he and his wife arrived under a different name- not William and Rosa, but Lupa and Rosa. It's also not Braunstein but something else- I couldn't read the sure name. But Lupo is Wolf in Romanin, and this was his Hebrew name. (Changed into William after arriving in the States). Anyway, in the first place, I was looking for the list to see if they knew anybody in the states before arriving. If I'm right in my interpretation, the person mentioned in the list as the final destination is William's brother-in-law. But I can't figure out the name. ( I think the address is 1213 3rd ave. Minneapolis). I will dearly appreciate your help decoding the handwriting in the attached picture. A link to the page can be found here. ( no. 29-30) Thank you, Sharon Cop copsharon@... New York, NY. Sharon,
Probably this fellow, born circa 1870 in Romania, lived in Minneapolis, wife named Rose. Joe's name gets spelled various ways in the census. 1900 Joe Smilovitch 1905 state census Joe Smilowitz 1920 Joe Smilowitz Good luck in your search,
Sherri Bobish
Searching: RATOWSKY / CHAIMSON (Ariogala, Lith.) WALTZMAN (Ustrzyki Dolne, Pol.) LEVY (Tyrawa Woloska, Pol.) LEFFENFELD (Daliowa & Jasliska, Pol.) BOJDA / BLEIWIESS (Tarnow & Tarnobrzeg, Pol.) SOKOLSKY / SOLON / SOLAN (Grodek, Bialystok, Pol.) BOBISH (your guess is as good as mine! LOL |

Thank you, Sherri. That's probably the guy. what's strange is that according to Rosa's tombstone, her father's name was Joseph, so I'm not sure. It sounds weird that her brother was named Joseph as well. But I agree that's what the record says.... thanks a million for your kind help!

Hi Sharon,
So, Rosa Braunstean is a sister of Joe Smilowitz? And, Rosa's dad was named Joseph? Well, Joe Smilowitz may have used Joe as his Americanized name, but had a totally different Hebrew name. Can you find the tombstone for Joe Smilowitz and see what his Hebrew name is? Best regards, Sherri Bobish |

Wouldn't a man married to a woman's sister also be called "brother in law"?
Note that both Schmilovici and Moscovici can be throw backs to the given name of grandparents (Schmil=Shmuel, Mosco=Moses), the "vici" being the Romanian version of the suffix for "son of". Our family legend had it that my GGF from Romania called himself Leizerovici to escape army service. It was known (and documented) that back in Romania, the family's "real surname" was Siegler. Then we found his marriage documentation from Vienna, and from Romania, and his sister's and their Dad's surname and signature on those documents. Brother, sister and father - all were Leizerovici. Things became clearer when we found burial registrations, and graves in Romania. My GGGF, Bercu Dov Leizerovici was the son of Eliezer. Eliezer = Leizer. Family legend was put to rest. -- Odeda Zlotnick Jerusalem, Israel. |
