Second Gentleman Visits Ancestral Galician Shtetl of Gorlice #galicia #poland

Moving visit by the Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, to his ancestral shtetl of Gorlice. He was accompanied by friend of Gesher Galicia Matan Shefi of the Jewish Historical Institute of Warsaw. Several days before the visit, Mr Shefi consulted with Gesher Galicia board member Renee Steinig, who helped build Douglas Emhoff's family tree on Geni.com: https://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000035608578344 . Gesher Galicia member Caitlin Hollander Waas also contributed to the tree.

Interesting -
My wife's great grandfather was the Dayan of Gorlice (passed away purim 1930). I have a book of Gorlice, and I don't recall the name Emhoff in that book. I will get it and look it up. Perhaps it is only the Mandel side that is from Gorlice.

My father-in-law (A"H - may he rest in peace) owned a house in Gorlice; my nephew was there a few years ago and the name is still on the house. Almost all the immediate family of Rabbi Miller, the Dayan of Gorlice, were killed in 1942. My father-in-law and a brother survived the camps. Between the extended families there are thousands of descendants.

The 1905 arrival record of Douglas Emhoff's grandfather's five brothers ( https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFHM-46B ) mentions "Gorlitz" as their last residence, but we don't know how long they lived there. But for sure several of their mother's Blech siblings and their families lived in Gorlice. The Gorlice Jewish School Records which Russ Maurer donated to JRI-Poland.org and Gesher Galicia several years ago include pages for seven nieces and nephews of Mary Blech Emhoff (Douglas's great-grandmother). And unfortunately, the name Blech appears in the Gorlice yizkor book.
