Hi Nola, As you probably know, the fathers' names on Rebecca Sandler's and Sam Silverstein's gravestones are similar. On both, the father's first name is Avraham but the fathers' middle names differ -- יהושע (Yehoshua, Joshua) on Rebecca's grave and ישעיה (Yeshayahu, Isaiah) on Sam's. If you search the JewishGen message archives, you'll see that these two names are often confused, so there's a good chance that Rebecca and Sam were indeed siblings. The grave locator on Mount Hebron Cemetery's website shows six Sures/Suris burials in the Old Sinower section, among them Leib (died 1940) and Ephraim (died 1944). According to their death records, which are extracted on FamilySearch, Leib's father was Abraham Schaye and Ephraim's was Abraham "Yeswua," so they may well be siblings as well. Images of the original death records are here: The JGS (NY)'s burial society database associates the Old Sinower society with this town: Stara Sinyava, Ukraine The JewishGen FamilyFinder lists a researcher who's interested in the names Suris and Silverstein from Stara Sinyava. Thanks, Jan. I think this may be it. The family I am looking for was Suris, name changed to Silverstein when emigrated to U.S. in early 1900s. Sam Suris/Silverstein is buried in association with the Old Sinower Society. I am trying to establish that a Rebecca (Rivka) Suris/Silverstein was his sister. She is buried with her husband, Harry Sandler, under the Piliver Podolier Society. Also on a naturalization record for Sam's daughter, Lillian (Libe) Suris/Silverstein it says she was born in Podolsky, Russia. Now I need to learn how to find records in that area. I am new to Jewish Gen and find it a bit daunting even though I have been working at genealogy for decades in U.S. & British records.

This is not a direct answer to your question, but a suggestion:- By writing to the Jewishgen general list you reach the individuals who happen to be there on the day that you write. Jewishgen has a wonderful database :- spend some time to search in that. The JewishGen Discussion Group message Archives Search more than 588,000 topics. 1993-date. at https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__groups.jewishgen.org_g_main_topics&d=DwIBAg&c=Oo8bPJf7k7r_cPTz1JF7vEiFxvFRfQtp-j14fFwh71U&r=2GX_z08oBqRYarUXwkIjFnHriyRKk9EsTiZpbjxt9BY&m=-ukgQIbIyt17_D-brZS1mJHPHK8IJu8zEEyL2AmE-2Ll3dn3K_i3OogjDrkqOCgL&s=C3aeQen5ZWJqUpckp45mE27NICPBBMHlXhddLFNHnYY&e = which has ALL the messages for the past 30 years or so. If you search in there you will definitely find all the people who actually search(ed) for the family name(s) and LOCATION which you quote.- starting with your own message. I say that to highlight the fact that the system updates itself constantly David Lewin London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Search & Unite attempt to help locate people who, despite the passage of so many years since World War II, may still exist "out there". I am looking for the town of Tzinovar, but probably in Belarus region.
I checked out Sinowa in Ukraine and also Sieniawa in Poland but neither of these seem plausible for the surname Faivelovitz. Reb Yankeleh Faivelovitz, born about 1810. He had 2 children Yochanan and Basha. -- Ann Belinsky Modiin Israel MENDELOVITZ, FAIVELOVITZ: Lubtsch (Lyubcha), Karelitz, Vilna MANTEL: Dumbrova-Tarnowska BELINSKY: Male Sedlische, Tarnipol GOLDSTEIN: Odessa, Jerusalem (Ottoman) |

Nola, Sinowa in Podolia Gubernia is today known as Synyava in Kamanets-Podolsk Oblast.

I need to determine the name of the town ancestors emigrated from. On the ship's manifest in 1909 it says Sinowa, Russia. It must be a misspelling because nothing comes up on a Google search. Can anyone take an educated guess as to what it may have been. I think it is in present day Ukraine but that is just my guess.
