Oops, I had it backward. Rechcia—whose formal name was probably Rachel—was related by blood to her Uncle, Abraham Stern, rather than to her aunt, Ethel Stern (née Ochsenberg). Her mother's maiden name would have been Stern.
Reviewing letters from the photo donor, Rachel was 20 in 1936. So the school photo would date from around 1926, and the teen group photo from around 1932. Rachel and her family did not emigrate; they were killed in the Holocaust. -- Nina Schwartz artstop@... |

I am a graphic designer working on the cover of the upcoming Memorial Book of Drohobycz, Boryslaw and Surroundings. Suzanne Berelson sent this photo of a school class, and I wonder if anyone can identify the second girl from the left in the front row. Her name was Rechcia, and she sent this photo to her aunt and uncle in America, Ethel Ochsenberg (née Stern) and Abe Ochsenberg. All we know is that her mother's maiden name was Stern.
Rechcia looks about 10 in this photo, which seems to have been taken around 1930. She also appeared in a photo of a teen group (sent by Jean Hummel Newell) taken about 6 years later, so, if she emigrated, it cannot have been much before 1937. In the teen group, she is also second from the left. If you know Rechcia's full name, please write to me at artstop@.... Please also write if you recognize anyone else in the photo. Many thanks for your kind help! -- Nina Schwartz artstop@... Moderator note: as requested, please respond privately to her e-mail address |
