The Jewish Genealogical Society of Central New York will present a virtual program (Zoom): “Finding Family in Online Newspapers,” on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 1:00 pm by TV researcher and genealogy teacher and author, Janeen Bjork.
The presentation will begin with a brief look at OCR (optical character recognition, the technology that allows printed pages to be digitized and searched online) and its limitations. There will be a case study, Janeen’s cousins-in-law, the Kuznitzes of Syracuse, Rochester, Linden, NJ, and Boca Raton, and the techniques she used to find them in dozens of newspaper items, despite spelling errors and the unreliability of OCR.
There will also be an overview of the resources, both for-fees and free, that are available online for finding historical newspapers. Prior to the Q&A, Janeen will do a brief walk-through of a handout with tips and resources that will give participants all they need to find their family members in online newspapers.
You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
