Ariogala 1784 Poll Tax Question #lithuania

Jeremy Lichtman

One of the signatories of the 1784 Poll Tax record for Ariogala is listed as follows (translation from the LitvakSIG extract file):

Chackiel Yankielowicz (father a rabbi) - "thus sayeth R'Yekhezkel (Ezekiel), son of the high rabbi, R'Yakov (Jacob) (father deceased)."

The same person (who appears to be my 7th gg) is also listed on the 1765 Poll Tax record as:

Chackiel Jankielowicz, Starszy (i.e. community elder)

Based on the age of his children in the records, he must have been born circa 1700.

I'm wondering who Rabbi Jacob is though. The 1784 language seems to imply that his identity would have been obvious. Anyone have a clue?

I forgot to add: the family were Cohanim. They adopted the surname Shapiro circa 1826, but family tradition says they were not "real" Shapiros.

Greetings from another Ariogala researcher!

I did look at a listing I have of gravestones in Ariogala compiled by David & Sonia Hoffman in 1999.  None are old enough to be of help to you.  The two oldest years are 1832 and 1840.
