Births records for Memel (Klaipėda)from September 1874? #lithuania #records
devicesofwonder@...
I want to find a birth record for an ancestor who was born in Memel (Klaipėda) on 1 September 1874.
September 1874 is too early for the Landesarchiv Berlin. Are there any other archives or database? Thanks, Paul ST GEORGE

Try searching the ALD of LitvakSIG. Hopefully you'll find what you're looking for.

Thanks Joyaa, I only found Klaipeda, Lithuania, Civil Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1874-1920 <https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61298/> and this is only marriages and deaths for Klaipeda.
Please will you send me the link to births (1874) for Klaipedia?
Thanks,

Paul,
The earliest birth records for Memel that I know of were recorded beginning in December of 1874. However, Memel birth records include some that were recorded on a delayed basis, and there are, in fact, half a dozen such delayed records for 1874 births. None of them have the precise date you are looking for, but still worth checking in case your information is not accurate. The records can be searched on Ancestry.com as mentioned by Joyaa Antares, but I suggest you search in the LItvakSIG All Lithuania database (https://litvaksig.org/search-ALD) because the extractions there are superior - they are more accurate, and they include the mother's maiden name, the father's occupation, and sometimes further information such as the death of a parent. For delayed registrations, in particular, Ancestry sometimes conflates the year of recording with the year of birth. Russ Maurer Klaipeda district coordinator, LitvakSIG

Thanks! Now I have looked at ALD there are some hints that need confirming. I have a possible name for the father.
Was there a census in 1885? My ancestor would have been 11 years old in 1885 so still living at home in Memel. If there are census records, I can find the names of other members of his family living at the same address and so confirm the name of the father.
Thanks again,

Paul, Another great resource for Memel research is Dr. Ruth Leiserowitz: Ruth Leiserowitz (ruth@...)

I do not know when, if ever, there was a census in East Prussia.
There are Memel directories for a few years (none particularly close to 1885). They can be accessed at http://www.bork-on-line.de/adressbuecher/start.htm. Russ Maurer Klaipeda district coordinator, LitvakSIG

Paul - in addition to Russ's tip, you could look here - https://www.online-ofb.de/famlist.php?ofb=memelland&b=A&lang=de (I don't read German and change the language to English).

Hi Paul, Yes - that's the correct dataset. I think that Russ's comment "However, Memel birth records include some that were recorded on a delayed basis, and there are, in fact, half a dozen such delayed records for 1874 births" would explain the inclusion of my "Anna MARKUS". She and two of her siblings (they were born in 1867, 1870 and 1873) each had their births registered in 1890. Joyaa ANTARES
