Can anyone access a library copy of Jewish Religious Personnel in the Russian Empire 1853-1854? #russia

Chloe Kogan

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would have access to the book "Jewish Religious Personnel in the Russian Empire, 1853-1854" ("Sinagogi, Molitvenne Doma i Sostoyashchie pri nikh Dolzhnostne Litsa v Cherte Evreiskoi Osedlosti i Guberniyakh Kurlyandskoi i Liflyandskoi Rossiiskoi Imperii 1853-1854") by Genrich M. Deych which JewishGen has created an index for at this URL:

https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/misc/deych.htm

According to the page above, this book is available at "YIVO, the New York Public Library [*PXW 93-1103], Harvard University [Circ. HWMSWV], and at the library of the University of California at Berkeley, among others." I am hoping someone might have the time and ability to access a physical copy on my behalf and see if there is any additional information beyond what is included in JewishGen's indexed results for the following entry:

NAME: KOGAN, Ios
TOWN: Akkerman
GUBERNIYA: bes026 (meaning: Guberniya of Bessarabia, listing number at which the name is found in the book [nomer] 026)

According to JewishGen's summary of the contents of the book, the book may include information beyond the indexed results including:

  • The year at which the individual took up his duties (c kakogo goda v dolzhnosti).
  • Further detail of the reporting town or congregation (mestanakhozhde nie sinagogi ili molitvennogo doma).
  • The office held by the individual (imya dolzhnostnykh lits).
  • The size of the congregation (chislo prikhozhan), which I assume refers to only males over the age of 13.
  • The individual's compensation (razmer zhalova nia), which is frequently omitted.
I am hoping some of this additional information would help me determine if this person might be a relation.

I appreciate anyone's help and advice and would certainly be happy to compensate you for your time!

Many years ago I contacted the Yivo library, gave them the exact details I had from JewishGen, and they very kindly and graciously sent me a scanned copy of the page.
The text is in Russian.

The NYPL has research services for offsite patrons.  These are fee based
I believe they will scan Pages in a book
They scanned pages of a microfilm for me a few years ago.

Here is where you contact them

Also You could try contacting the DOROT division of the NYPL

Try an interlibrary loan.  That is how I access rare books.

I came across an indexed entry for an ancestor in this book - I emailed the NYPL with the finding information, and they got back to me very quickly with the scanned page.
There was no charge at that time - in 2017, I think.

Unfortunately there was no additional information to be gleaned from the page (once I had it translated).  I have never been sure, though, if there was another page with more complete information elsewhere in the book.

I want to thank everyone for their advice and recommendations!

I am responding publicly because I want to share that a very helpful member of JewishGen gave me the contact information of someone with direct access to a scanned copy of the book in question and they are helping me get the page I'm interested in. I don't want to post that person's information publicly, but I do want to let folks know that if they are looking for records in this book and don't have easy access to a copy, please email me privately and I will share their contact info with you.

Thank you all,
Chloe
