Combining Search Terms (Double First Name) #names
monfried73@...
Good day,
I have exhausted looking for my grandfather's family by their last name (which wasn't their real name) so I thought to look by first name. My second great grandfather was Abram Shmuel, but as both are very common names, I was hoping there was a way to search Jewishgen by combining the two search terms. I have tried "&" or AND between the names or quotation marks around the two words or as a Starts With search. Any suggestions for how to tie the two names together so I can search for "Abram Shmuel?" I know the towns he is from (Seduva, Baisogala and occasionally Panevezys) so it's important to be able to narrow down all the results.

Do you have the passenger manifest for this person? For 20 years I have tried to find my Singman family under Schimkov after finding them in 1888 coming from Vilna to NYC with no success. When I mentioned this to a possible match to my husband who emigrated from Russia in 1992 he asked to see the original indirect passenger manifests which I forwarded. Lo and behold, he came back with the name SINKO. I was then able to spend the next several years finding all the family some 3 generations back and their siblings in

4 towns in Lithuania and in the US. You can imagine I spent the Covid years doing this tremendous amount of research.

Fay: I assume you mean Hamburg Departure Lists. On Ancestry.com
a name search brings up results from both Direct and Indirect
indexes.

Yes, I know exactly when GG-GF came into the U.S. through Baltimore with most of his children in 1902. My GGF would follow him in 1907. I know his father's name in Hebrew and English. My challenge is he had 11 children with two wives from 1875-1898 so I assumed some civic record would pick him up. I am just looking for a more precise way to go through all the Abram's.

When I use quotation marks in the Surname or Any Field fields, I get zero matches or the screen doesn't bring back any data.
There is one marriage record for my GGF's wedding in 1902 where Abram Shmuel is picked up as a Parent so I know there is data in Jewishgen to find.
Thanks,

Don't use quotation marks in Jewishgen fields. You may use a [ brackets] to make a search start with particular letter such as [A]nker which will eliminate all Ungars.
I am not sure that you can even use an * or a ? but they may work.

Yes! That's it, sort of. [Abram Shmuel] now gives me all results where there is an Abram AND a Shmuel in the record, but not necessarily next to each other. Lots of Abram, son of Shmuel, but this does distill the possibilities of where an Abram Shmuel could be. Still quite a few records to go through, but this is much better.
THANK YOU!!
